Hi all,

I recently acquired an early 50's Martin Committee. I know that there are 3 bore sizes. Are there markings on the trumpet indicating bore size? Or does it have to be measured and where?

Thanks for your help,
Leon

Hello, usually on the side of the valve block above the serial number. (Stamped 1, 2 or 3) If there is no number there it's likely the Medium bore. 453 model.

No number there. Should be a medium bore then. Thanks for your input.

Early on (pre-war) #1 was often marked "M".

#1 (M) = .438 bore

#2= Dual bore, .438/.453

#3= Dual bore, .453/.468

1945 was a unique time for American brass making with all of the makers desperate for materials and skilled labor. (Bach made some wild combinations, because he was salvaging parts from trade-ins!). Martin transitioned from the first generation Handcraft Committee to the more familiar, looser slotting, second generation at this time - so it is not even certain which you have without seeing it. The odds are, but by no means certain, it will match the pre-war Handcraft Committee in core construction, but the only way to really know the bore for certain is to measure the upper leg of the tuning slide's inner diameter, and the same on the second valve slide.

The lower inner tuning slide will be the bore of the instrument.
