Hi all, I have the chance to play trumpet some in churches, just because I enjoy it. I realized I liked gospel a lot. I did a search for gospel tunes and it surprised me how wide the range is: Morning has Broken, What a Friend, This World is Not My Home, Fly Away, etc. I did some google searches but didn't find anything trumpet-specific.

Here are my questions (I'm grateful for any advice you'd share):
-What have you performed that was fun and lyrical?
-Do you have any suggestions for books, arrangements, or just play lists?
-Have you ever played these without accompaniment and what are the drawbacks?

Thanks for the help!

I play in church all the time. We have a wind group that plays mostly our own arrangements of hymns as well as some other music. I have played in duets as well as trios in church, but the only unaccompanied solos I usually do are introductions or single verses with the group or fanfares for festive occasions such as Easter.
The tunes you mentioned are really hymns, not what I would call gospel music.
There are lots of lyrical church related songs, random ones that come to mind right now are: Martin Luther's My Bride the Church
In the Bleak Midwinter
Thanksgiving (derived from Haydn)

When I get a chance, I will page through some of the music we do for others.
I would mostly recommend doing them with an accompanist or at least one other person. It adds a lot since many of these have rich harmonies.
