I'm a new on this block but I was in a club in LA and I heard one of the best Jazz trumpet players I've ever heard. His name was Jonathan Dane. He has a decent voice and can even scat well! But the guy is a mad man on the trumpet. Range is decent high G, but he could hold his own with any of the best jazz players in the world. (and I mean anyone!) I searched the web and see he's in the band "upperstructure" and a few other things. Anyone know anything about him?

No never heard of him, but I beleive in what you say though, there are tons of excellent players out there who havent been recognized. For example, my aunt is Clora Bryant, bad female jazz trumpeter in the time of Dizzy and Bird. She is the ONLY female to recored with Dizzy. She dosen't play no because triple by-pass surgery dosent allow her to play, but she still educates, and teaches. It just goes to show you that the Trumpet world is a VERY BIG world out there...

Jonathan is an awesome player. He's played with a lot of LA bands. Here are a few samples:

Nice solo at 2:40

Upper structure band is some really wild and difficult charts
Nice solo trade with Jonathan and sax at 4:00

He's got some serious chops. Thanks for the introduction.

Always nice to see talented players. So many don't get the recognition they deserve.

btw, I like your horn. Nice big sound. My B1L is a 1978 Love it!

Me too. I have never played a B1L, so I am not sure what effect the step bore has, but I have heard it is a very open horn. The X3L is very open too, but not uncontrollably so, and I find it an absolute joy to play. I found it about three years ago in a used trumpet shop in Japan, love at first note. Amazing thing was it was basically brand new -- the valves were not even broken in.
I really like the tuning bell.

He really seems in control of his sound, getting exactly what he wants out of the horn, never letting the horn dictate how he plays. No matter your taste in music, you have to admire that.

I cracked up when he mimicked the piano here at 10:17

Whoa, Jonathan is great! Please don’t ever mention anything about his range again, frankly he’s a vastly better musician than most people who can produce lip vibrations in the double/triple registers. (Not a high note slam, I still love them, but any serious listener should be able to hear the huge musical gulf between someone like Jonathan and the endless ‘professional’ YouTube DHC screamers).
