Hi everyone

I have lately sold my Wild Thing trumpet.

Few weeks ago, I had this gig to play Lead, and I pulled out my CarolBrass 5000 with the same mouthpiece I used with my Wild Thing ( Warburton 3SV / H backbore ).

I was surprised the sound wasn't as cutting through as with the Wild Thing.

So, I am now in the search of my new lead mouthpiece, at least the variation of my (old) set-up that could work with the CB.

So, I have two questions :

- what is the physics behind the change of horn that make some mouthpiece combination work or not - and how to fine tune it ?

- for those of you playing the CB, which mouthpiece do you use ?

Thanks

JiCe

hello
depends on the "openess" of the horn, the gap etc.
From what i understand from your post, a tighter bb could suit
best

Since you are using the Warburton, try a KT backbore. I used a Warburton 3ES for years and after trying various backbores, I found the KT to be the best for playing lead and cutting through.

The NY backbore will definitely give you that sizzle.

Using a schilke 11a with my carol-5000, plus the D shaped slide. Enjoying it for lead, jazz combo etc.

Have you thought about gap? The mouthpiece may insert differently into the two horns. The gap "needs" for you and the different horns may be different. Before changing mouthpieces, I would think about the gap. You can get shims from Jason Harrelson to test it out by narrowing the gap or use the paper trick to widen the gap. It is worth the experimentation if you like the mouthpiece.

(I've played CarolBrass horns for almost 10 years)

The Wild Thing is a much more open horn than the CarolBrass 5000 series by specs. The 5000-YST has a smaller bell flare than the 5000YLT. I typically play outside a lot, so I came to appreciate the larger 72-style bell flare for broadness of sound. The YST bell was amazing on a microphone, however.

The Wild Thing bell is a larger flare, which is closer to the YLT bell than it is to the YST bell.

I ended up on a 7770-YLT, which is essentially the 5000-YLT, with no brace on the tuning slide, and a larger leadpipe flare. I got more sound out of it, with less repercussions of playing irresponsibly outdoors.

I'm not a CarolBrass dealer, but I can point you through some of the stuff with their instruments if you want. I've owned about 6 or 7 of them at this point - only because I absolutely destroyed them playing in theme parks. There are 2 CarolBrass dealers in my area too, which would be happy to talk to you about stuff. If it ends up being a simple thing as swapping out a leadpipe, that's easy enough to do. My current CarolBrass Bb is on its 2nd bell, and 5th leadpipe (again, theme park accidents).

There are many variables that can make two horns feel/sound different.
Especially from two manufacturers the leadpipe, bell, weight, and gap could be
completely different. Even with horns from the same company these variables may exist.

For example, I use different backbores with my Yamaha and Bach,
as well as two Benges and Calicchio I use.
More specifically for commercial playing I have found that while the
H backbore works well with one horn, the NY is better on another. The Q and Qm
are also great depending on the horn.

How do you fine tune it? The best way is to try them all! Used Warburtons
can be found quite easily and retain their value well. It's a relatively inexpensive
trial and error experiment to find what works best for you. Suggestions are
a good place to start, but ultimately you are the only one who needs to feel
and hear what sound you are after. Peace!
