My community band’s fall concert was early last week. Good time to consider this topic. Finger speed/dexterity is the first thing that comes to mind. Seems that no amount of practice is sufficient for my 67 year old fingers (and brain) for me to cleanly play certain fast passages. |

Finding practice time, endurance, not chipping notes, improv.
Found an excellent teacher (after trying several) and it's helping all 4 - little by little. _________________ StudentofTrumpet/SingerSongwriter/SocialWorker

the trumpet.
Then amatures that don't recognize the amount of commitment it takes to be good.
Lack of preparation by those in leadership positions. (a nightmare in many commmunity/volunteer groups)
Poor rehearsal skills, especially from those that have degrees or positions that this is expected (ala the retired HS band director that should have skills)

High range. What’s helping: Caruso, soft and centered, just a 6 notes variation for now in its own session with plenty of rest afterward (hours). Also leadpipe buzzing. Getting a soft high c on good days now.
Tuning, tendency to play sharp. Using the Tonal Energy app drone feature. |

Reliability - my embouchure is hit and miss. Some days the horn sounds and feels great, other days I sound like I need to empty the water key. I practice more frequently, and am doing my best to recreate the 'good' embouchure.
Unstructured band practice - we're a small (very small) drum corp, and horn rehearsals are more of a social event than anything. I'm going to have a chat with the Director.

Top answer so far, and I don't see it being outdone.
Edit: Tied for top answer in my opinion along with similar answers.

Maintaining a constant air flow between notes. Seamless fluidity.

My biggest issue is finding the balance of everyday life and practice. I try to play everyday, but there are times I don't pick up the horn for several days. _________________ Steve Mejia
