Our community big band, the Glen Ellyn Jazz Ensemble, is having a blast with Rich Willey’s charts. We don’t sound like Rich’s band yet, but we don’t have Wayne Bergeron either!

I remember playing through Rich's duet books with him back in 2003 or 2004 at some trumpet-fest thing in Jacksonville, FL. We had a blast, and played All... Day... Long! _________________ All the Best,

Rich's album with all the L.A. guys is fantastic and those charts are great.
He also gives away cool combo charts, including a set of very accurate Horace Silver transcriptions. I played several of them recently in a tribute concert and they were a joy to play. Check them out! |

Also, the transcriptions of those great Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer charts! What great tunes!
Rich, you're a mensch, and your books are great. I enjoy every one I've purchased (6 at least at this point?).

You guys are too kind!
Jim, your big band must be pretty good . . . you've got a couple of our toughest-to-play charts and I'm hoping that you post clips so we can hear you guys at some point.
I'm doing a couple of out-of-state clinician/guest artist gigs this fall, playing those charts in front of audiences (rather than microphones), and really looking forward to that!
Hey, music is hard work but it's also tons of fun, right? Thanks, everybody! _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

Thanks, Rich. Our band does a nice job. We have some school band directors in the group and that helps a lot. These guys can play!
As for recording some clips, it’s not going to happen for awhile because we rehearse in a park district space that has been closed ‘til further notice due to the Coronavirus emergency.
Speaking of Covid 19, I started a thread in the Jazz Forum on its effects on musicians and their lives. A moderator moved it to the Lounge where it new replies don’t show up on the Home page list.
Even though you have to stumble on it the thread has 65 replies with some pretty interesting comments on how the coronavirus emergency is hampering players’ efforts to make music and, in some cases, earn a living.
Mr. Moderator, if you’re reading this, how about moving the thread back to a forum where people can find it. Fundamentals? Horns? Performance? You pick. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I bought several of Rich's charts and had been rehearsing "Boogie Beast" with the local community college jazz band, looking forward to using my valve trombone in a big band.
Now we're all sheltering-in-place and it's anybody's guess if there will be an opportunity to play the Spring concert in May.
But the charts, and the CD, are excellent. Kudos to Rich. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |

I bought a used Holton bass trumpet for the same tune. Even got a hybrid Chanson trumpet mouthpiece with a bone shank. But it's going to be awhile before my BT chops are ready for prime time. Will probably do the solo 5th part on flugel. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I was originally a trombone player, so the huge mouthpiece (relatively speaking) isn't an alien planet.
But I'd really like to play the main solo choruses on valve trombone... except that makes adjusting back to the trumpet mouthpiece for the challenging soli section quite hard. Given what's going on around here, I guess I have lots of time to practice switching. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |

To play these charts well it’s essential to get the album and play your part along with the band. At 200 bpm, “Funk Heapl” will chew you up and spit you out if you don’t. _________________ Jim Hatfield
