Be aware, generally, that playing with a practice mute is going to affect your open sound. Increased resistance, different tone. Practicing at moderate to soft levels will moderate this somewhat. But you pay a price, nonetheless.

I've had both versions of Silent Brass. In my experience, the older one puts your horn a little more out of physical balance. It has a little more resistance.

The newer, weight- and balance-wise, is not felt. I believe it has less resistance but a little more problems (not great) with intonation.

BTW, using either, I've had no complaints from apartment neighbors, and that includes playing up to 11:00 PM at night.

Did I miss something? I thought the question was about the Yamaha's old and new silent brass?

you didn't miss something at all, thanks for your reply.
i was answering to your warning about practicing with a mute, which i'm aware. But this was not the point.

I got an answer from a friend that runs a shop and told me there's a compatibility between the two yam.
