Our 7-piece band is fooling around with Zoom as a way to jam during the Covid-19 emergency.

We're not making much music yet but having fun trying to set things up so we can.

Anyone got tips on how to maximize results? We have a variety of devices, both Apple and Android, as well as lighting environments. I think one guy must live under a bridge.

Have you actually tried this with success? Other platforms always had too much delay to play together. I experienced Zoom for the first time this week, but it was a meeting - voices - and that seemed to work OK.

We had three guys in the meeting. No delay. Audio was decent. Going to try to get the rest involved this weekend. The price was right: Free.

Cool. Many thanks.

Good luck, and let us know how it works.

Interestingly, I had a get together with 4 close friends this morning using Zoom audio and video. We have met most Friday mornings for more than a decade face to face in a local restaurant. With the current restrictions, we gave Zoom a try from our homes. It was study and conversation for about an hour with the interaction much like live with no apparent delays or freezes. Based on that one experience, I would think that it would work well for other applications. I would be most interested to see how your experience turns out!

I'm still hoping that someone has tried a combo rehearsal with this.
I occasionally teach with Skype and while it works fine for that, there's too much delay to play duets, so that's out.

Has anybody put musicians and their instruments to the test using Zoom irl?

We plan to get our 7-piece trad group together on Zoom on Sunday 3/22/20. Will keep you posted.

Meantime, my wife had a TGIF party on Zoom last night with ten friends and said it was almost like their usual gathering without the travel.

I have been on several music related Zoom sessions. There was some delay. It was particularly apparent when someone was using a metronome. If you are all close and have good Internet connections, it might be better. All of my uses have had people on different continents, so there definitely is some delay.

Will be very curious about how this goes.

We tried Zooming some tunes with trumpet, cornet, soprano sax, guitar, tuba and there was too much lag. Plus the free version of Zoom cuts you off at 40 minutes.

All the players live in the Chicago area so I don't think distance was the problem. We were all using different devices with different ISPs so maybe that figures in.

We're going to explore other online possibilities because there's no telling how long we're all going to be cooped up.

Some concertina people are trying this, couldn't get Zoom to work, and think they found software without a whole lot of latency:

Thanks for the information about jamkazam and soundjack. Very interesting stuff considering the latency in most other communications platforms more geared to meetings and visuals than music.

Jammr looks interesting. Has anyone tried it? What about the plug-in mic recommendation on the jammr website.

How does Jammr sync? There is a fundamental issue of the speed of computers and the speed of light which can't be overcome. If everyone is just playing to the metronome and not listening to the other players it could work. Another way that could work is if you are hearing the other players on the previous take when a new take is made. But I don't see any description of this on their website.

I read a post that suggested some of the lag may be due to the app trying to compress and reduce noise. Supposedly there is a option to defeat these enhancements that may reduce the lag.

Just downloaded JamKazam which looks promising altho you need an audio interface and a long ethernet cable. Just popped for those items on eBay for under $100. Looking forward to some worldwide jamming!
