I have my books ... some from the 70's ... and I LOVE them. I will resist digital until I have to.

Slowly, I am going more and more digital. It really is making life easier in many situations but I do still overall prefer paper hard copy.

Basically I like paper but its not going to be hard to sell me on a PDF version!

Not totally music related but....my mother-in-law is the tech director at a college prep school that is 1-to-1 Apple products (iPads for younger kids and Mac Books for older). Surprisingly, they are still using hard copy text books because the students prefer having a hard copy text. Research has also shown higher retention/comprehension levels from paper vs screen.

I recently played a show where the second trumpet player loaded his part onto a tablet. He had it all set up. It worked fine until one of the stage crew came bounding through the pit and knocked out the tablet. Just before curtain, he was able to restart his tablet and as I recall, missed part of the overture. I can see several advantages to reading music off a tablet, but just as with electronic voting, a paper backup is a must.

If you use a tablet you don’t have to worry about burned out lightbulbs, shadows on the music, wind blowing, a host of problems. If your power gets low just plug it in where you would have plugged in your stand light. Tell the klutz to stay out of the pit.

The only downsides I can think of atm:
Relatively fragile if some idiot knocks your stand/holder over.
Potential battery issues if you're not prepared with a portable battery.
    Outdoor gigs in rain
    Outdoor gigs in bright sunlight

Those all could be problems, I agree.

I don't leave mine on the stand unless I am sitting there. If someone is working near me I will grab it. Your horn is in more danger sitting on a trumpet stand.

My iPad battery used 22% of it's power in over 3 hours when I recently left it on and set the display to never turn off. Bring a charger if you are concerned with running out of power.

If your battery is getting old and you are seeing signs of trouble you need to change it ahead of time.

I wouldn't use it in a parade. Do you play outdoor gigs in the rain? The music is in danger of getting wet also. I can't of a time when it was raining that the gig wasn't suspended until the rain left or was canceled. Danger from drinks being spilled on it? Don't let anyone near it with a drink. In the near future they will probably be water proof.

Bright sunlight could be a problem. I think that it could be angled in a direction away from direct light. Maybe have some kind of shade for it?

I prefer digital versions, but will buy the physical book if it's not available in PDF form.
