Mouthpiece advice for beginning cornet player

Anywhere from Yamaha size 11 (smaller) to 14 (larger) is reasonable.

I’d say you’re probably just fine with the one you have! There’s no harm in trying a different one though, if you’re curious. Yamaha makes good mouthpieces and you can get new ones for like 38 bucks, and a used one maybe under 20. If I had to recommend a good and cheap one that you probably couldn’t go wrong with I’d say Yamaha 14c4 or 13c4(a size smaller). Mouthpieces that come with horns are often around a Yamaha 11c4. A slightly bigger one would make you tired faster for the first few days, but it wouldn’t take you long to get used to and it’ll give you more room for a bigger and/or darker sound.

I ended up getting a Bach 3C.......people had recommended Bach 6, 3B, and 3C.... since 3C seemed like it was the biggest change from my original mouthpiece I went with 3C

After a brief comparison....I like both

The 3C is a bit brighter and it seems to make me play a little sharp—- I expected the opposite since it has a slightly longer shank than my original mouthpiece

Not sure yet which one I’ll use as my regular mouthpiece but at least now I understand a bit more about my mouthpieces & horn

Well the mystery has been solved...sort of

My original goal was to figure out what my generic unmarked cornet mouthpiece was...

Just got a Denis Wick 4B

They are very similar...the Wick goes maybe a millimeter
or two deeper into the horn...bore looks maybe a tiny
bit wider....cup might be a bit deeper...sound might be better
But basically the Wick is similar enough to my generic mouthpiece
that an inexperienced person like me can
hardly tell the difference
