It fell out of use for many years due to the book being out of print. However, Claude Gordon's methods are based on it and you'll have an easier time finding a teacher for his method. Not to say there isn't someone around who still teaches based on Maggio. And now that you can once again purchase the book I'm sure there will be more teachers willing to use it. _________________ Brian James

Claude Gordon studied with Herbert L. Clarke for nearly ten years until Clarke's death. Then, though he had by then become a top call Los Angeles studio musician, Claude took several years of lessons with Louis Maggio. From these years of study with these two Greats, he combined what he learned from them with his own experiences as a player and started teaching and writing his own books.
Basically, Claude combined Clarke's way of teaching, using all the great method books, technical studies books, and flexibilities books including Clarke's own books, in a very systematic, organized approach, with Clarke's way of having his students play the various technical studies and exercises until completely out of air, as long as they could play in order to develop the blowing muscles, with Maggios twelve or so basic range exercises (both pedal note arpeggio exercises and upper register arpeggio exercises).
You might want to read and study the above sentence a few times - it is quite long!
Claude expanded on Maggio's basic exercises, creating 52 versions that include reworked material from the Arbans and other books, and become much longer than Maggio's more simple arpeggio exercises.
Among the most important improvements Claude made was to add instructions for the pedal note arpeggio exercises for the student to "Hold last note as long as you have air and longer; try to crescendo" (as you run out of air). This combining of Clarke's wind power exercises (playing as far into exercises as possible on one breath) with Maggio's pedal note exercises creates the perfect way to safely develop the tremendous air power needed to play high notes without having to play a lot of high notes to do it.
In my opinion and experience, this all, plus the very organized (“systematic”) way Claude taught and instructed in his books, makes his method the best method for developing professional levels of ability on a brass instrument. I studied with Claude for many years and it was his teaching more than anything else that was responsible for my wonderful 30+ year career as a professional trumpet player on two different continents.
Sincerely,
John Mohan
