I’ve been a fan of the Inderbinen Wood flugelhorn ever since I discovered their website 20 years ago. I’ve saved for a long time, and I’m very close to placing an order. I’ve searched the forums and have read what I believe to be every Inderbinen-related thread. They seem to have a great reputation. I rarely see these horns for sale in the used market, which tells me they are not only rare, but once someone purchases one, they tend to keep it.

It’s a big investment, and I would love to hear from anyone who currently owns, previously owned, or had the opportunity to play one of these amazing instruments. Most importantly, what have been your experiences regarding the intonation tendencies of the Wood flugelhorn? It would be great to hear your thoughts and experiences.

it is time to give this thread a bump, as I actually put a down payment on an Inderbinen Wood flugelhorn. I am quite excited to have taken the plunge. it is going to take a while to build the horn, but I know it will be worth the wait.

My impression of the Inderbinen Wood is based on a very brief encounter at the 2013 NAMM show. I might have had to use one of the mouthpieces that was available at the booth.

I tried several flugelhorn that day. Adams, Schilke, etc. I really looked forward to trying the Wood and was excited to see it there. All I can say is that it was the equal to the best horns there and even to my Wild Thing (except for ergonomics), which is saying a lot, IMO. I didn't notice any problems with intonation. It had a good sound. It didn't feel awkward in the hand. It had a very unique look!

Congratulations on your purchase! I hope it brings you joy for many, many years.

Exciting to hear! How long is the wait time and how hard is it to get a hold of Mr. Inderbinen? I've heard nothing but amazing things about his horns, and the flugelhorn is supposed to be one of the best in the world.

Hi Goby,

I was told the wait time should be approximately nine months. That seems standard. It may take longer, but it will certainly be worth the wait. As for contacting them, they have a phone number on their webpage, but they do not publish their email address. Instead, I had to fill out a contact form. My laptop (like others) has an autofill function, which I used to fill in my contact information. I also cut and pasted my message into the textbox. After doing this, I did not receive a response. When I tried again, I typed in my contact information and my message by hand. I don’t know if that made a difference, but it seemed to work, as I soon received a response. Our correspondence has been excellent. Suzy Inderbinen is gracious and kind.

I've been playing a Wood for a few years now. It is a superb instrument. I've had several flugelhorns and the Wood is a clear cut above others in terms of playability. It is in tune with itself so the intonation is spot on. Since it resonates easily, if feels fairly effortless to blow. The sound is rich, fluffy and dark. You are gonna love it!

It took only 13 1/2 months to build the entire Empire State Building.

If only Inderbinen had a couple thousand more employees I'll bet they could build horns a little bit faster

If they had just one more employee they could build horns faster.

I certainly understand your views regarding build time. From my end, I'm not too worried about it. As I stated in my original post, I discovered Inderbinen trumpets 20 years ago, and it's taken me that long to be in a position to purchase one. As long as they get the build right the first time, I'm going to be thrilled with the outcome.

I am so glad to hear about your experience playing a Wood flugelhorn. Like you, I've had several flugelhorns. My favorite was a Courtois that I bought in 1999 (it is the one horn I regret selling). My other flugelhorns had issues, and I'm happy your Inderbinen is a clear cut above the others you owned.

Update! Inderbinen finished building my Wood flugelhorn. 8.5 months, not bad at all. It will be shipped soon, but they did send a delicious pic of the horn. It's gorgeous, like a piece of fine art.

Edit: I originally posted a facebook link of the pic, but for security purposes, I removed it. If anyone knows how to post pics on this site, please let me know.

Let us know how you like it. Excited for you! I have never played an Inderbinen but Roy Hargove sounded fantastic on it.

Congrats on your long-awaited purchase, and also congrats on seeing this part of the dream come true! I've never played this flugel, but I had the privilege of hearing Roy Hargrove play his live on a number of occasions. What it inspired in him was truly extraordinary, and I hope you find every bit as much inspiration with each breath it helps you turn into music.

Looking forward to seeing those 'preview' photos, but also hopefully an 'unboxing' 'first session' and later some other musical offering once you've gotten to know the horn, found the right room in which to play it and record...

Happy practicing!

Clearly a rush job as that monkey could climb right up it, no problem.

It arrived!! International shipping took less than a week, and everything checks out. The good people at Inderbinen know what they are doing. Check out the initial clip below.

Congrats!

I've been drooling over that horn since I saw Hargrove with it at Yoshi's like 20 years ago. Even had Dick Akright modify my student model Blessing to have similar ergonomics when I was in high school.

Wish I could justify one but I play flugel about twice a year (and not at all in 2020).

Enjoy! It's the best flugel in the world IMO.
