Episode #53

https://youtu.be/ATgiMkfMYhA

This is kind of meathead, brick-like orchestral playing. Trying to maintain consistent pop and thickness throughout. Endurance is a bit of an issue just because it's a healthy forte throughout the entire etude (at least the way I play it). I will say I'd rather start with the Leonore than end with it - it's a bit coarse by the time it shows up at the end.

Interesting characterization of the etude. I would have said throwback to militaristic trumpet style. But I guess there is a lot of this here and there in orchestral music.
Well handled.

Episode #54

https://youtu.be/bLXLUYha73I

There are a lot of things going on here. My biggest issue is going to be endurance, and not getting careless and making stupid mistakes. This was actually the very first take. I thought it was too conservative, so I went back a couple of times to try to get a more interesting take, but of course with each take, I have a little less in the tank. In keeping with the spirit of this project, I really want to produce a performance a day. If I gave myself multiple days of recording or edits, these would all be very different etudes...

Sheesh!

I didn't find it conservative at all.

That was great!

You say conservative, but I think it is more authoritatively. Again, I listened twice, once just listening and then following the music. A lot of instructive points there. It seems quite difficult not getting turned around by the rhythm in addition to the endurance problem. Great first take.

Another somewhat gnarly one. There are a couple of spots that are tricky, and getting them all in one take was a challenge. Most of my personal challenges centered around fingers/coordination between fingers and tongue. It covers a lot of range as well.

Gnarly is right. Wow that is a tough one, all those time changes, minute rests, etc. I liked the way you gave it your own touch at the end.

Hello all,
Somehow, this thread is miles long and I missed the beginning. 4 weeks ago, I ran into Hakan's video of Charlier #1. I did not get far into the book in college, but thought that It could give me challenge. Jim, thank you for your interpretations. I finally caught up to what you had done a month earlier, and now have been following your videos also. Soon to be lost, this begins week/Charlier 5 for me. I give it 5 days, record and send it off to one of my trumpet community people, just for accountability. Now I know why you go by Mr. Clean... Thank you again.

Episode #56

https://youtu.be/gHT0dOwxLWM

B major is not a key I play in that often, so this was fun. It does traverse the "crack zone" around top of staff G#, so this was a useful reminder of how to do that. Also, as usual trying not to compress small interval - good interval spacing. Fingers are not a strong point, so I had to focus on keeping the 16th runs as smooth and even as I could. Don't miss the last high B!

Episode #57

This is one of those etudes I thought was going to be easy to get, but... The biggest issue for me was coordination - fingers wanting to lift early and not aligning with the tongue. Also, keeping the articulation very clean throughout. The further down the page, the more saliva management comes into play. As always, concentration. Deceptively tricky little etudes...

The fun showed. Your playing was very assured. Lovely lyricism and very nice phrasing in your approach to this one. I am a bit curious about how you make your phrasing decisions in an etude like this. Are they though-out and calculated in advance or a sort of "the way it feels" approach?

Thanks for a really nice addition to my morning!

Some of it is planned, but I have to trust my gut in the heat of battle, so to speak. If I'm dogmatic about my markings even though I know a breath would be a good idea, I usually pay for it within a measure or two.

Yes. A lot of nasty accidentals well handled. I particularly liked your touch in the opening passage, the delicate handling of the upward slurs and drop-offs from the high notes of a phrase. Very enlightening and instructive.

Fingers. I do not have the best fingers, so keeping this even was a challenge. Transitioning back and forth from the bottom to the top of the range in the form of slurs (no opportunity to "reset", though that's not a great idea anyway). Endurance.

Nicely done! I was hoping you would record this one.

I used to noodle around with this one back in the day. It's a finder bender, especially transitioning to the diminished arpeggio (that arpeggio is my favorite part of the etude).

I never got it as smooth as you.

Nicely done. Tough one especially when it gets really low after the high runs. I think my fingers would be in a tangle, so I am very impressed with your keeping it going. Nicely done easing up at the bottom of the horn.

Episode #59

Please note that this departs somewhat from what Phil has written. In the etude, he suggests that the performer can insert the solo from "An Outdoor Overture" between two reference numbers. I assumed that was Phil's preference, and that perhaps copyright laws prevented him from doing so. I have since learned his preferred version is what is on the page - sorry Phil!

This one was mostly about control over the high and low register - I rarely get above about mp throughout. The biggest challenge was playing the "Outdoor Overture" solo with everything right before it, and then continuing for another page. My usual take on this is a little more extroverted, with more spin in the sound, but the first third of the etude had other plans, lol.

Very nice Jim. Haunting and lyrical. More music than etude!

Articulation endurance - trying to keep good, clean pop on all the notes throughout the etude, which takes you over a pretty wide range of the instrument. Again, my biggest problem is early lifting of the fingers. :-/

You sure keep coming up with new and interesting material. If you played every etude in each of the collections you have used, I think you would have a lifetime of etudes. What breadth of work. Nice Presto here. Nice control too. My second listen looking at the music was awe inspiring. Love the way you challenge yourself. That is a lesson to all of us.
