|

I brought my cornet to my tech and he asked if I need a ring for the third valve slide. Do I need this? |

For which model of cornet? Did it have a third slide ring that got broken off? Was it originally designed with a third slide with a ring?
Pictures would help. |

Long ago some horns had some purely for holding that otherwise did nothing. If you’re comfortable without out it and it’s not OE then you don’t need it _________________ a few different ones |

Your cornet must be a pre - 1950s model
If you don't have a third slide ring, you will have to lip the note. It is not a hard repair. So the first slide is lacking a 1st slide ring too? _________________ King 603 cornet

The OP could be talking about an Olds Ambassador cornet missing its adjustable third-slide ring. We just don't know until he offers more information. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |

It's a 1959 Olds Special L-5 large bore cornet - I'll post a picture when I get it back from the tech. |

I was looking online and saw a Olds Special cornet. It had a 1st slide saddle ring and a 3rd slide adjustable ring. Curious what type of ring you are having installed _________________ King 603 cornet

If it's an older cornet, they all came without them and the third valve slide is a little longer compared to modern horns to make up for the lack of being able to move it manually and adjust the pitch. If this is the case, it would probably be a bad idea to get one for moving it and the sole purpose would be just for holding modernly. _________________ Bach 1B

My strad 184 has a ring and I wish it didn't. It restrains the way you hold the horn. I may get it removed some day. _________________ Too many Old Cornets to Count |

The question that needs to be asked is, "does the cornet play the low D and C# in tune or noticeably sharp?" If the cornet plays in tune without the need to adjust the third slide you probably don't need the ring. If the horn is obviously sharp on those two notes, you do need to adjust with either the third valve slide (preferred) or first valve slide (optional).
I find it hard for me to use my cornet's third valve slide due to the angle of my wrist--works fine on a trumpet but not a short cornet. On cornet, I adjust with the first valve slide. _________________ Dave

FWIW I was unhappy the with the 1st saddle on my Strad trumpet and had it truncated and rotated so that it's more ergonomic for the thumb that's in it and and so that it's less inclined to pinch my other thumb. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Somebody just listed an Olds 3rd slide ring in the Marketplace. In actuality, your third valve slide probably doesn't move easily enough to make use of one for tuning purposes. If it did you would need a slide stop to keep it from falling out. On those older cornets it's usually a place holder for a music lyre or a convenient place to help hold the instrument. In other words, if you have to have it, there is one available. But you don't need it. _________________ Brian James
