Hello guys , I decide to start collect the mouthpieces that Pops use to play from the beginning to the end and I want to now all the possible brands and specifications you probably now.
I all ready have the Giardinelli double cup replica from Graig Black , I also have a Selmer special 4 double cup from the 30s-40s .
I now that Pops also use to play a Leblanc skeletonize mouthpiece with shallow cup and flat rim (do you now the size?) and Pardouba, Al Cass and Purviance.
I want to now any info you now specially from the first years.
Regards. _________________ Lawler TL5-1A Bb 2015

There's a Louis Armstrong House and Museum and I think the curator has a detailed information about this. You might want to contact him. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I do know that user 'stevecass' might have some helpful information to pass on to you- if he has the chance to chime in- concerning a specific few mouthpieces for Pops that were made for him and sent off (I believe Al Cass made three for him? One of which was definitively used by Pops later to record). I think I remember reading about his Purviance mouthpiece around here somewhere and he played the Parduba for a few years (beginning in 1943), likely around a size 5 - 5 1/2. Hope this may help at all. Consider using the small, blue 'Search' button up at the top do dig deeper on the forum. _________________ Bach 1B

Do you know anything about this piece (specifications etc)?
The seller says that Pops use to play this piece, is true?

I hope you get what you want, giakara. The video I saw from the curator, he specifically said that inquiries about Sachmo's mouthpieces were among the most frequent inquiries, so he's pretty familiar with that _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Schilke made one for him as well.
That one might be difficult to find.

I think Louis Armstrong has written about his own modifications that he made to a mouthpiece in 1920s. Possibly that was in his book "My life in New Orleans". |

Quote: | Here’s a quick photo we took of a Purviance 4*K4 that we are making up to take to the 2012 ITG Conference in two weeks. The 4*K4 was Louis Armstrong’s trumpet mouthpiece of choice later in his career. While working for Purviance, Bob Reeves made many of Louis Armstrong’s mouthpieces. Early on I recall (this was in the NOLA museum) he filed the rim on the sidewalk (legend has it) to rough it up. I might be mistaken or conflating with another player. _________________ "I'm 73 and I'm still learning." - Maurice Murphy

I think that was the mouthpiece modification story. |
