Someone put together a cut up of the Diane Schuur Basie stuff from late 80s. It's actually quite a show-reel for Stripling. This is what I think of when I hear a "lead sound". Dominating presence when needed, but all the swing, style, and phrasing. Just a real crisp sound that isn't out of control. Hint of vibrato and life, little crescendos. All the nuance, and all the sound.

Same sound here as well:

Great stuff and what I consider essential lead trumpet listening.
For the nerds (like myself); looks he was on an Elkhart Bach (not the NY one he plays now). And legend has it, all on a Bach 1? Or something like that. _________________ "I'm 73 and I'm still learning." - Maurice Murphy
Thread killer.

Man I was obsessed with this album about 10 years ago!! Dennis Mackrel on kit... wow, he swings so damn hard!!
Byron played a Bach 1, yep. Later in his career I think he changed to a 1C perhaps.
One of my favourite lead players, ever!! That sound, WOW. _________________ Maestro Arturo Sandoval on Barkley Microphones!
