Hi everyone,
Got stuck in quarantine in a place other than my home, and forgot to bring my Arban, which is the version revised by Maurice Andre. Does anyone have the pdf of this?
Thanks |

The Arban's that Maruice Andre revised is published by Editions Billadout. It is laid out completely different than the Goldman/Smith/Hooten/Marotta version. It has twelve lesson broken into four sessions (48 total sessions) that bounce around the book a little. Each lesson also contains a number of exercises written by Michel Ricquier.
After those twelve lessons, there are another eleven technical lessons which has most of the other interval studies and tonguing exercises.
I believe the Art of Phrasing section is slightly different than the G/S/H/M version.
This edition is incredibly clean and as someone who likes a prescriptive practice session, it is conveniently laid out. This edition is still under copyright and a legal PDF version probably doesn't exist.

@Zack_Mac - do you mean that the material is laid out on progressive, integrated, self-contained lessons where the material is grouped in various aspects and by level of difficulty, rather than jumping all over the book? Thanks. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

The book is broken down into four parts.
First part: 12 "Programs," each emphasizing a different key, with mini practice "Sessions" of a few exercises each in each of those Programs -- intervals, major scales, chromatic scales, syncopation studies, double tonguing, etc. For example, Program I has four practice sessions. mainly in the key of C, each with about four exercises. Part 1 is around 100 pages. Many of the "First Studies" from the Carl Fischer editions of Arban are missing from this edition, and as someone previously noted, not all of the exercises were written by Arban.
Second part: 11 technical "Sessions," each about two pages long. That is around 60 pages. Advanced multiple tonguing, gruppetto, etc.
Third part: Art of Phrasing and Duets
Fourth part: Characteristic Studies and Fantasies and Variations |

Dayton gave a really good summary. I wouldn't necessarily call it progressive. It starts out in C and goes around the circle of 4ths for the keys. Some of Ricquier exercises in the fourth session of each program can be a little tricky for a beginner or late beginner. |

Thanks guys. What level of player do you think it calls for, in the beginning? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I'd say intermediate level, which is what I would say about the Carl Fischer editions of Arban as well.
To give you a sense of the starting point: Of the six exercises in part 1, program 1, session 1, three are original. The other three are (using the page numbers from Carl Fischer):
page 39 studies on the slur #4
page 59 scale study #1
page 59 scale study #3 |
