I would like some advice about choosing a special order mouthpiece from GR.

Brief background: I came to GR 64ES because I read that it is easier to handle for some players who want to play the Shew Yamaha Lead mouthpiece but find it to be uncomfortably small. I LOVE it. It did just that and I play it on all my commercial and latin gigs. The 64 rim diameter is quite a bit smaller than mouthpieces I had been using but it quickly became very comfortable for me.

I am one of those players who believe it is good to play on the same rim all the time if possible, so I got flugelhorn and cornet GR64 mouthpieces that work wonderfully for me on those horns.

That left me needing only a 64 mouthpiece with a deeper cup for playing in jazz combos and intimate stuff. I want a dark, fluffy, somewhat diffused jazz sound.

However, the 64M is the deepest trumpet mouthpiece with a 64 rim that GR makes without a special order. They have several deep options for cornet and flugelhorn, but not for trumpet. Someone told me that players who prefer the 64 rim usually don't want anything deeper.

The GR representative sent me the following list of possible options that I could choose from to meet my needs. I don't know which to pick and $230 is a lot of money to spend on a shot in the dark. Does anyone have any experience with a 64 rim and any of these options?

We have on file:

64C
64C**
64C*
64X
64VB

64X is between the L and LX and that may be pretty cool. The C series has a decent cup volume and higher alpha angle than the MX. If you want diffused and funky, X may be the way to go.

You may also want the VB. V-ish cup, great on Bb trumpet. Oh the choices!

I'm thinking the 64VB may be what I need. What do you think?

They do actually make a 64MX. I called Dillon Music several years ago, and they happened to have it in stock. Be worth checking out, as they have a return policy.

Does GR make one of those faux flugelhorn mouthpieces with a trumpet shank the way Mark Curry and Bob Reeves do?

I think one of these types of mouthpieces would give you the fluffy sound you are looking for. I think any of the GR mouthpieces you list would have too many high overtones for your liking. They will give you more lows and lots of depth, but to my ears, they will still have highs that I think you are trying to get rid of.

They do and I have one and I like it! But it doesn’t sound like a trumpet—it sounds like a flugel.

I forgot to mention that I did have a 64MX that I got from a guy on the marketplace. Not that much difference in sound and character than the M cup.
