I have a friend's Holton 29 cornet in my shop. I don't really know anything about this model. I went to the Holton Loyalist sight and there is no info on it. Do any of you know this model? Seems to play well.

The Holton Model 29 cornet was designed in 1938 and remained in production through the mid-50s. It is a classic Besson wrap cornet, minus the extra forward crook in the leadpipe, in the larger American scale, and while not particularly trumpet-like, falls into the American Long Cornet classification. During WWII, Holton military cornets were 29s. After the war, the 29 was one of 2 cornets used as the basis for Model 27 Stratodyne cornets by modifying them with a lightweight, after 1949 red brass, one piece bell. The 29 was the basis for the majority of mainstream Holton cornets that followed.

They are workhorse cornets. They are not inclined toward BBB applications, but can manage with the right player and mouthpiece. In terms of energy and effort required, they are about average for similar American cornets. Intonation is as one would expect, and adding throws to a 29 (or the large bore 28 version) is not a bad idea.

Their greatest strength is covering all the bases. Their greatest liability is not being focused on any one in particular.
