No quacking that I could detect. The new mic system has certainly made your sound more direct, but I would say that the nuances of your playing are there in the previous setup too. This one just feels more immediate, and perhaps that may be more appropriate for etudes.
Nicely done. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

This one was about style. Phil Advises the performer to play this in the style of a great bassoon soloist, so I really tried to play in a very compact, characterful fashion. Striving for consistent pop and centers and retaining that character throughout the dynamic range. Also respecting the G# grace notes, which are certainly not trivial - very easy to break those notes. Save a little something for the C# on the end! _________________ Jim Wilt

My goal was to maintain a robust, orchestral-type sound throughout. |
Goal accomplished. Nice and crisp. Gotta love that key. Great for piano! _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Maintenance work - trying to play consistently throughout. Not a huge challenge, but going after the outliers is always something to keep an eye on. I probably picked this on a day that I practiced a Bitsch or Charlier, haha. _________________ Jim Wilt

Nicely done, and the little variation in tempo spices it up a bit and makes it more musical. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

The biggest challenge in this one was tongue-endurance. I started with single tongue, and then segued back and forth between single and double to try to give my tongue a break - was not always successful, but this is why we practice this type of exercise. I can't think of anything in the standard orchestral rep that would require as extended a period of constant articulation, which is why I'm a little out of shape on this here. Again, some days (and etudes) are better than others... _________________ Jim Wilt

Sounded great. Seems pretty successful to me.
Just listening to that one made my tongue ache. _________________ -Tom Hall-

Love listening to you...
I also have two ribbon mics... Read that you use an F4 Zoom field recorder.
Does that provide enough gain without a separate preamp for the ribbon microphones? I'm recording trumpet as well and the other options for preamps are very expensive?
Fellow trumpeter recording himself for now...

The F4 does provide plenty of gain. Having said that, I recently transitioned to a Royer ribbon and a UA Apollo Twin interface. They have not shown up in the vids yet, but you will hear a lot of different sounds in the coming weeks as I try to figure out the sweet spot of the new gear. _________________ Jim Wilt

On your Youtube page you told someone this was sloppy. Though I can see why you might say that, your sloppy is pretty darn good. Tough on the articulation too. The other thing that struck me, is that, when I look at this etude, I really see the academic side, but when you played, I really heard the musical side. That is very cool. Thanks. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Multiple challenges here, starting with control. This excerpt does not get above mf, with most of it at pianissimo (though I think I've got the gain up too high on the recording). The 2nd mvt solo from the Shostakovitch Piano Concerto is embedded mid way through, and it is considerably harder in this context. I tried to put more spin in the sound, but the first third of the excerpt sort of took that out of play for me, lol. Gnarly etude, Phil. It's great but very touchy _________________ Jim Wilt

I've been out of circulation for just over a week. I'm looking forward to catching up on the sessions I've missed.
Just enjoyed the latest in the series. To me it is lyrically haunting ... very nice. more, please, in the same mold. _________________ Eliot

It did sound like the gain was a little high, almost like you were a bit close to the mic or some other thing with physical placing. Still fine to listen to.
Yes, gnarly, but lyrical as promised. Nice haunting sound that fits the music. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Yes, the combination of the longer bell (Bb) and the cup got me way too close to the mic. I wasn’t going to throw away a pretty good take, though. These aren’t reference quality recordings, lol. _________________ Jim Wilt

Difficult timing well handled while keeping it musical. The one thing I learn each day from these is that anything can be musical if played that way. Seems totally obvious, but when we sit down to practice we can get academic. Today's etude, certainly says not to do that. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S
