Hi everyone,

Of late, I've been trying to build a nice vinyl collection. I recently found a copy of Philadelphia performing Fanfare For The Common Man with Gil Johnson at the helm that's great.

What vinyl recordings (orchestral, solo, jazz, whatever) are on your desert island list?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the great list! I’ll be on the look out for some of these. Although, probably reissues.

Charlie Parker, One Night At Birdland
Clifford Brown / Max Roach, Live At The Bee Hive

Back when I bought those albums, vinyl was the only way to get them! Now I think they're all on Spotify/Youtube. Nothing is really rare any more, is it?

I can dig it - I want to have a small collection of stuff I really love. I feel the invention and popularity of instant streaming services make it hard to focus. So much, moving too fast... I just see the value in having a real record and enjoying a simple ritual: sitting in my chair and focusing on what I’m listening too. Too much is, “go go go, consume, consume, verbiage!”

I want my life back. So, anything you can recommend is highly appreciated. I want to escape Spotify as much as possible.

A friend of ours just gave us Alberta Hunter's "Downhearted Blues: Live At The Cookery" 2-vinyl set and I have to tell you that we love it so much we are definitely going to wear it out. If you don't love this album then maybe music just isn't your thing!

We also treasure our Tuba Skinny vinyl albums we have purchased on our many New Orleans trips. Putting on those records is like a little trip back to the Crescent City.

My partner and I make it a point to try to buy vinyl records on our trips. That way it's not just great music, but a reminder of a nice vacation. Plus the record stores are usually in the cool neighborhoods of whichever city you're exploring anyway!

Wow! too many to list but a few that I loved:

Maynard Ferguson "music for dancing"
Stan Kenton and the Neophonic Orchestra
Several by Doc Severinsen
Several by Al Hirt
Beethoven's 6th Pastoral by Cleveland Orchestra, I believe.
Anything I had by NY Philharmonic, Philiadelphia Orch.. or the CSO.
I had two Dizzy Gillespie albums
Everything I had in the early 70s yet of Maynard was vinyl
I had two albums by Nat King Cole that I loved.

All of the ones I can even think of I had from around 1960 on. I think
my brother in Texas has many yet, though. Used to play that old vinyl
until the grooves looked faded grey.

Wow! Thanks, all. Very thoughtful responses. I've gone ahead and ordered a few from Discogs.

Were there any exact recordings by the NY Philharmonic that really struck you? The Bernstein Mahler 3 is incredible, however a copy of that on vinyl is insanely expensive.
