I have just received a new Jupiter XO flugehorn. Nice horn, but it seems (for me) unable to be able to sustain any note I play. Starts out ok but will not respond when I try any softer tones or longer tones. Just seems to cut out. Tried several different mouthpieces with no success. I have been playing flugelhorn for the past 40 years with other Jupiter and Couesnon flugels and never had this problem. I am sure it is not me, because I play my Schilke trumpet and cornet with no such problem. Could it be valve alignment or do you think it may be something inherently wrong with the instrument? Driving me nuts, so any feedback will be welcomed. _________________ Bach "Big Apple" M37 Strad trumpet

Does that happen with ALL of the valve combinations?
I'd try removing the various valve slides and see if having the slide removed when the valve is UP results in leakage or other problems.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

Have you checked the spit valve, to make sure it is sealing properly? _________________ do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God |

This sounds like a joke, but it's not -- get a cleaning snake and see if you can snake all the way through the instrument. Make sure there's not something IN the horn causing an occlusion of some kind....

I had a customer bring me a YTR6345, squirrely as hell. He didn't want to mess with it and traded it for an old Bach. I decided to figure it out, Turned out that there was a pencil stub stuck in the bell crook. I ended up using that horn for the next 6 months. |

Check the spit valves. Make sure valves are in right position and turned the right way. Blow a spitball through the horn (all valves depressed).
It's probably not you! _________________ Dave
