Indeed. The thing is, trumpet, which is certainly my focus, is highly directional, so actually, it's the folk in front of us who have greater effects of noise-induced hearing loss. A viola-playing mate of mine told me that they really do get the brunt of the brass. Worse possibly is the double-bass section in an orchestra, in front of the trombones, who are the loudest instruments in the orchestra.

Practicing in a small room as I do (and, I suspect, a multitude of TH users do?), even with some sound-absorbing panels, means that the trumpet sound has nowhere to 'go' except back to me!

And yes, earplugs are the obvious answer, but 'internal' instruments like singing and brass are a different kettle of fish. A guitarist or drummer with ER15 plugs hears everything they do, just 15 Db lower. After they've acclimatised to the plugs, the quality of music making is unimpeded.

However, we trumpeters, wearing similar plugs hears everything 15Db lower but also hears the internal sounds and tongue movements and such, so the whole musical experience is different, and to my ears, a whole lot less beautiful to be involved in from a musician's point of view.

It occurred to me that flugelhorn would be quieter in a small room, compared to trumpet? Does anyone know the actual difference in Db output between trumpet and flugel?

I'm planning to ordered a pair of custom earplugs like this from this company called Big Ear. I just saw this brand from another thread here and I already checked their website. They are a legit brand and they have good quality products IMO. Then I suddenly had this question in my mind...

Do you guys use earplugs? I play and practice while using earplugs...not the foam ones but the ones made for musicians. Is it weird that I play music while wearing earplugs? I don't know. I just started to use them when I read it on some website about 3 years ago. Should I buy this pair that I've been searching about for the last 3 hours? Am I a compulsive buyer?

Seriously guys... Do you also use earplugs while playing or practicing?

I began using foam earplugs already mid seventies - always thought they should suffice. They didn´t.
Beginning nineties a shrill whistle having played the soprano in the Brassband in an echoing room made me go see an ear doctor who told me "stop playing" or start using professional earplugs, adding "but no one can play with those". However I got myself "Musicians plugs", custom molded to fit my ears. Began with 9dB then went up to 25dB. Heard myself, missed all the jokes, misunderstood the conductor etc etc. Real nuisance.
After a year or so I had grown accustomed. Never affected my tuning, I learned how to estimate the soundlevels. Real relief. High levels in bands? One church concert peak 117 dB!!! Average 90.
Today Etymotic in bigbands, Etymotic+former custom mold in brassband.
So it takes a while to grow accustomed to these gadgets - sometimes a pain if not in the ass so in the ears - but the alternative?? Nope.
Today I also wear hearing aids (Oticon, really good) but not while playing.
Ear plugs does take away some of the fun playing but as the alternative is not playing the choice is simple.. I´ve been forced to tell my fellow bandsmen about my experience - so as to make them understand, not laughing all the time at my misinterpretations of this or that.
Go see an ear specialist in order to get a base line for your hearing - while you still can "hear me talking to ya!"
And no you are not a compulsive buyer - you are a clever thoughtfull chap! Be prepared and use them always in bands, and if your practice facilities are too cramped, measure the sound level (many apps available, like "Decibel X") and act accordingly.
