A few weeks back there was a thread about the Deluxe trim vs. the Standard trim of Martin Committee's (thread located here: https://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=64868)

Well I now have one of each horn in my arsenal so I thought it'd be fun to do a blindfold test with the two horns. So below is a video with me playing each horn in three different "rounds" (ballad, blues, unaccompanied). So in each round try to guess which horn is which in the survey above and I'll post the reveal video in a few days. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out, happy guessing!

BTW, for the recording I did not use any EQ, reverb, effects, etc. I recorded these clips using 3 mics. A Cascade Fat head ribbon, a MXL 144r ribbon (off screen), and my interface (Zoom R24) has 2 built in condensers that I recorded as a stereo pair (also just off screen). The only adjustments I made to the audio was the volume levels of the various mics, and I used the same volume levels for all of the recorded examples.

I also used my early Mt. Vernon 6C throughout on both horns.

Well I liked 2-1-1

I didn't go for which horn I thought it was, just for which sound I preferred. I have to admit, though, that I really was conflicted on #3. Nice playing, BTW. I really wanted to keep listening, no matter which you played.

Craigtrumpet - thanks for the blind test. BTW, nice sound on both horns. My guess below. Where I denoted Deluxe, to me, the sound was slightly brighter. Are the horns the same bore?
Ron

Round 1 - Horn #1 = Standard, Horn #2 = Deluxe
Round 2 - Horn #1 = Deluxe, Horn #2 = Standard
Round 3 - Horn #1 = Standard, Horn #2 = Deluxe

Hey Ron! Yup, both are medium bore (#2) horns. I don’t have large bore Committee type money hahahah

I think I like 2 1 2. Would be interested to hear how they sound with a different mic. Ribbons tend to tone down the highs.

Agreed about the ribbons. I did have 2 condensers (from Zoom, recorded as a stereo pair) just underneath my bell to try to capture some of the highs, but I do need to invest in a decent condenser or at least a dynamic mic like an SM-57, somehow I don’t have one of those yet which is kind of crazy.

I'll go out on a limb and guess which was which.

Round #1: Standard; Deluxe

Round #2: Deluxe; Standard

Round #3: Deluxe; Standard (tougher to distinguish)

How did I do?

Very interesting!

Could this be reformed to a survey-type thread?
Something like this:
--------------------------------------
1. R1: (S,D); R2: (S,D); R3: (S,D)
2. R1: (S,D); R2: (S,D); R3: (D,S)
3. R1: (S,D); R2: (D,S); R3: (S,D)
...
...
8. R1: (D,S); R2: (D,S); R3: (D,S)
--------------------------------------
I guess this could draw more participation.

I thought about that but I couldn't figure out how to create the survey. I didn't see any kind of option when creating the post. Let me mess with it.

EDIT: Hey, I figured it out! Thanks for the suggestion

For the TH'ers who chimed in above, can you go ahead and click your guess on the new survey I just put in at the top of this thread? Thanks all!

It looks great! This thread becomes even better.
Let me also participate in the survey.
But, I need to listen to your clip again...

Where’s all the Martin Committee owners? BTT for others to participate. I certainly thought there would be more participation.

Great playing, Craig! I'd also be interested if they "feel" different to you...

I prefer horns 1,2,1 and think that they are the same horns. If I were to guess, and that is all it is, I would say they were the Standard. I am not a knowledgeable Martin guy and have only played the Deluxe.

I surely wasn't meaning to cross any boundaries, did I break a rule or something?

I figured there might be some people wondering about the horns so I was just giving a heads up that I'll post it tomorrow.

I must've missed something. I don't see anything offensive, at all. Did I overlook something?

No, not at all. What I meant is that the quoted post begged for a snarky political retort. I was tempted! Sorely tempted...
