He has an unusual standing posture in both of these videos - it kind of reminds me of sword fighting. Does anyone know what the story behind that is?

A teacher once suggested something similar to me. It was kind of a relaxed version of one of the classical ballet positions (3rd?). The leg turns outward from the hip. The idea was that it was supposed to create the most stability with the least amount of tension or effort.
