My dad said I shouldn't bring my new trumpet to the beach for fear of "salt and sand" that beach air brings. Any merit to this? Thanks!
PS I will not take it out of the house we are staying. Just bringing it with me on vacation. |

My home is about 2 blocks from the ocean. and I've taken vacations that are even closer. I would rinse my horn periodically and wipe it down after playing. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

What Kehaulani said. I’ve played gigs very near and even on the beach in Galveston, TX, and always gave my horn a good flush and wipe down after.

The salt will cause it to tarnish faster and can lead to further corrosion. A quick water rinse will take care of that. If by "on the beach" you mean physically on the beach then sand would be a concern for me -- it is abrasive, and as a fine power tends to seep into everything. If it stays in the house as you said I wouldn't worry about it.
OTOH, if this is a short vacation, may be better to take a break and just enjoy it without the horn, plus not have to worry about annoying those around you when practicing or getting it stolen or lost in transport etc. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

For this kind of situations I have bought decades ago a cheap pocket trumpet.
So no risk for my Weimann or my Xeno and it is good enough for what I practice in vacations! _________________ S’il n’en reste qu’un je serai celui là (Victor Hugo)

I grew up in Florida and while I was not well off enough to live right on the water, I was rarely more than 10 miles from it (I'm from St. Pete in Pinellas county, a peninsula bordered by the Gulf on one side and Tampa Bay on the other).
Salt air will certainly affect some metal objects over time, but I never had trouble with any horn over it. I never knew anybody to have trouble with their instruments over it. Given the fact that you're just going on vacation (I assume by vacation we're talking about a few weeks at most here) I'd say take your horn and don't worry about it.
Sand would be a problem if you lay your horn in it, scrub it (bad for the finish) or get sand inside of it, but unless you're going somewhere like baja or something where there's going to be sanding whipping through the air constantly, I don't see that as a problem either....
