May not be what you're looking for exactly, but something I like to do to practice low register are bass lines from songs I like. The bass line from "The Chicken" for example. |

You can find many, many excellent exercises to develop your low register in Clarke's Technical Studies, Schlossberg's Daily Drills and Technical Studies, Vizzutti's Trumpet Method, Iron's 27 Groups of Exercises, Belck's Modern Flexibilities and Progressive Flexibilities, etc. Most if not all of the "great" technical study books have plenty to offer.
Claude Gordon, Louis Maggio, Jimmy Stamp, Pierre Thibaud (Advanced Method and Daily Routine) and Sandro Verzari (Daily Exercises and Exercises on Fundamental Tones) take you beyond the low register into pedal tones. Once you develop your pedal register, Gordon's "30 Velocity Studies" are quite interesting (and challenging).
Moving beyond technical studies, Snedecor's excellent Low Etudes was already mentioned, but it should be noted that they are advanced etudes that stress the low register, not easy etudes written in the low register. Bousquet's 36 Celebrated Studies -- available separately or as part of the St. Jacome Method -- are also fairly advanced etudes that are excellent for the low register.
And then there are the many etude books written for developing trumpet players that stay mainly in the low and middle registers. Hering's 50 Recreational Studies and 40 Etudes, and Getchell's First Book of Practical Studies are excellent examples. Others include Hilliard's Intermediate Studies, Sparke's Starter and Skillful Studies, and Vander Cook's Etudes.
Good luck!
[Edited to add the titles of the relevant books by Thibaud and Verzari.] |
