Hello! Just asking for suggestions of albums, songs, and artists to listen to. I listen to things like Gordon Goodwin's stuff, The Complete Atomic Basie, Syeeda's song flute, the Moanin album, and some of Wynton's stuff. Thanks! |

Since you like Gordon Goodwin then you're almost certainly going to dig the Tom Kubis Big Band. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Studio Jams #67 Watermelon Man and Summertime. It's a good example of how listening to eachother can increase the effect of a performance. The rythm section enhances the solo's particularly well in Summertime. The most impressive thing about it, is that it's a jam session, not a rehearsed piece.
Whatever, I like it at least. |

If you need additional enticement, Kubis recordings routinely feature the likes of Wayne Bergeron and Jack Sheldon. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I'll limit this to 10:
- Maynard Ferguson - Chameleon (I could name a bunch of his, but start here)
- Freddie Hubbard - First Light
- Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
- Toshiko Akiyoshi - Tales of a Courtesan
- Mel Lewis - Mel Lewis and Friends (killer, virtually unknown album)
- Stan Kenton - Plays Chicago
- Don Ellis - Tears of Joy
- Buddy Rich - Big Swing Face
- Mario Bauza - 944 Columbus
- Woody Herman - King Kobra
I've included a lot of big band things, many from the 70s, as this would have been some of the stuff that influenced guys like Gordin Goodwin. There are MANY more artists and a LOT more albums by the people I've listed and many others to check out. Hope this opens some new frontiers for you....
