hello everybody, I have a question about the doc severinsen 1000B trumpet. why have I never seen a white or silver color doc severinsen 1000B trumpet around for sale on eBay or anywhere, they are always the typical yellow gold color, I have only seen one silver like in 1998 I believe??Did I get lucky to see one or are they rare or in some way different?

I don’t know what “white” refers to, but “silver color” is silver plating, “yellow gold color” is usually polished brass with a clear lacquer coating. There is actual gold plating used, but I highly doubt it was ever available on that Conn Severinsen model. It’s expensive, for one thing.

I have never played one, but that Severinsen model Conn was not around for long, I don’t think it had great reviews. The same is not true for the Getzen Severinsen horns, however.

I think it was marketed as a "step-up" horn, kind of like MacGregor sold baseball gloves to Little Leaguers endorsed by Willie Mays that were definitely NOT pro quality gloves.

They are decent trumpets especially for the price they go for. I played one from middle school and most of high school.

I used to own one. Not bad tone but intonation issues made me sell it.

These Conns were sold at a low price point linked to a star name. The Getzens targeted a higher tier. In practice, I am equally impressed by both. I think the Conn out-performed expectation and the Getzen slipped the other way - but when the targets are unequal to start with that's not hard to do.

The Conn 1000B was a lot like a Holton T-500 Al Hirt. Inexpensive, but with a great marketing hook. As such, anything other than base finish (lacquer) made little economic sense.

As Doc like silver plated horns in those days, I suppose some must have been - for show if nothing else, but I suspect the percentage of the total run is pretty small.

I owned a Getzen Eterna 900 mod. Severinsen a true great horn

If the Conn 1000B is like the Holton 'Al Hirt' stay away from it; The 'Al Hirt' is a stuffy overpriced student horn, only the looks were impressif

When these came out I went to my local music store to play-test a few to see if it would be a horn I'd recommend to my students. I do remember playing at least one silver-plated model.

My overall impression at the time was that they were fairly free-blowing, but not like the Getzen Eterna Severinsen model that I'd owned for a few years. There was a large bore version that felt comparable in blow feel to my CG Selmer, but did not have the big sound I was used to. I walked away feeling that they were "a poor man's Bach" though the price was not that far below the Strads available at the time.

"larger bore version"? Sure you are not mixing the 1000B with the SS1 and SS2? Those did sell at the price of a Strad.

I believe this happens a lot with these two horns. They both came out at the same time and are apparently easily confused. The Severinsen Series or SS1, SS2, SS3, and SS4 were pro level instruments that used the leadpipe design Conn bought from Dave Monette. The different models featured different bell shapes and materials I believe. They are pretty good horns and can often be purchsed at an excellent price.

Yeah, it was the SS models I tested. Don't remember the 1000B.

There's some info in this thread. Don't know if that's helpful?

Apparently the 100B was a 'pro-entrance' model whereas the 1000B was a 'step up' model. It was also made in the USA, whereas the latter was supposedly made in Japan.

From what I read in the thread, they're definitely not the same instrument, and the 100B is 'better'...guess less is more?

Whichever one you saw that was silver could have been replated by the owner, you can have any horn silver or gold plated.

you could be right Brad361 but the horn was fairly new at the time ,talking about the 90s,,,why would someone go thru the trouble of removing perfect gold plated to then replated it silver. It could happen I mean
