Hi all,
I was wondering if there are any cornetists here (particularly for BBB style playing) who play on K&G (Kurun & Gilbert) Mouthpieces. I was considering trying some out (K&G 2C, 3C) but would like some info on how they compare to e.g. Denis Wick or Alliance. I normally play a DW2 (Backrow Cornet) but I find that I am too limited in my projection and range on this mouthpiece.
If anyone can provide any feedback, please feel free to do so! _________________ Besson Prestige 2028-2-0 |

Piggybacking on the previous question: any experience on the Kurun & Gilbert mouthpieces? Particularly interested in the trumpet variety. Comfort, rim, manufacturing quality, playing experiences, sound? _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

Hi jespermathijssen,
Since you haven’t gotten any feedback to your post here, I thought I would share something you might find interesting.
I have a FB friend who is a pro player that had been using the K&G cornet mouthpiece for BBB style playing. He told me the K&G had a very flat rim that handcuffed his chops, so he ended up moving to a Pickett mouthpiece as it had a far more comfortable rim. He had been playing the Pickett piece for around five years when he discovered the newly developed Greg Black short cornet mouthpiece series. He noted that these pieces are the best he has ever played on, and that the UK cup had become his favorite for brass band playing. He does have all three cup sizes, and says they are all very fine designs.
Here is what Greg Black says about this new design. “These mouthpieces feature our stock rim sizes and shapes and currently are paired with our "B" (shallowest), "A", and "UK" cup sizes. The "A" cup features a more American Sousa sound while the "UK" was designed with the British style brass band in mind but with more stability and better intonation without sounding too fluffy. The "B" cup has been popular so far for soloists in the larger rim sizes as well as Eb cornetist paired with our 7 or 10 size rim. This has been a very fun project with superb results! Feel free to contact the shop for more details.”
I know this information may not have been exactly what you were looking for, but hopefully you found it interesting. My friend is currently playing with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, so he is a very fine player whose opinion is worth noting. If you're looking to purchase something new, I would recommend trying the Greg Black pieces before doing so.

I own a 1C which is their largest mouthpiece. Inside diameter is larger than a Wick 2 but the cup is shallower.
I really think you should try a Yamaha 16E. The rim is wider than a Wick 2 but the internal diameter and the bite feel the same. I have been using one and it is easier to play on for very long periods. They are not expensive mouthpieces, amongst the cheapest you can buy. I know a few people who play on them in championship section bands. _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced
