About a year and a half ago, I was given a wonderful NY Bach cornet (long bell, akin to the modern 181) from an old friend. I don’t consider myself a cornet specialist, but it was a huge step up from the student model King I got started on!

The only two downsides to the horn were it’s lack of a first valve slide (not really a problem) and it’s “case”. It was given to me in a thin Yamaha cornet bag, one I had never seen before. I was a bit skittish about carrying it around in something that light, so I ordered a Glen Cronkite gig bag since I was so impressed with their piccolo bag.

The only problem is that the cornet is either too tall or... wide? The GC bag comes around too tight at the top, putting pressure on the valves that sometimes made them stick when I took it out to play.

My only other options are my super large double and quad cases to accommodate the height. I’d like to get either a small single case or a durable bag, but I want something that will fit right for sure this time.

I've been using the predecessor to the protec case (https://www.protecstyle.com/CORNET-PRO-PAC-CASE) for something like 5-10 years. It seems to have plenty of room for my 181 NY

Assuming your NY Bach has the standard cornet bell length of approximately 16.25 inches — Bach did make some cornets with longer bells— I would recommend the Soundwear bag. I use it daily for my NY Bach cornet.

Thank you both for your suggestions. Yes, it is the standard 16.25" length. I don't think I could go wrong with either of these.

If your Cronkhite is a single leather, it will probably "mold" itself to fit your cornet.

I had one of those, a Mt.Vernon, and I used my single trumpet made by Cronkhite.

I purchased a NY Bach 181 cornet (1947) a couple years ago. The case was damaged beyond repair. I got an SKB Soft Case for about $50. It fits the 181 cornet perfectly. For those interested, it also fits my 1957 Olds Ambassador cornet very well, too.

It looks like it's currently out of stock on Amazon, but here is the link where I purchased it. If you look at the reviews on Amazon, I posted 3 pics with various cornets.

You’re probably right, but the lateral pressure the GC puts on my cornet’s valve stems causes them to stick after using it. I don’t know if that leads to problems down the road or not, but it’s too annoying in the moment to bother using that bag.

Patient, "It hurts when I hold my arm like this".
Doctor, "Don't hold your arm like that."

Messina Covers has several designs that will work and provide protection and flexibility. Plus they will do custom work if needed.

My go to brass band case is the "Airline 2.5" - 2 cornets (Bach Bb & Schilke Eb), a couple mutes, and music folder.
