I've tried different 3Cs and the best for me are the Arturo Sandoval-style cups offered by Steve Dillard on http://www.horntrader.com
The're made for him by Mark Curry. Steve describes and demos them on his website. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I’m sure Steve could get you the piece as a top. Check with him. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I am a fan of the ACB 3C and currently play one. Great sound, response, efficiency, and flexibility.
In my experience, the 3C varies between manufacturer. I also like the Patrick 3C, but it is a little bigger than a Bach 3C. |

My favorite is Reeves 43C/2 , a little bigger feel than Bach 3C and much more efficient.

In terms of 3C size one piece, I've tried (and played) a lot (Bach, ACB, Monette, GR, etc.) but recently I have started playing the AR Resonance MC (3C) Bronze top w/ a 40 medium backbore, and all I can say is wow! I was on a Monette Resonance Prana before this once, and here are a few of the benefits I've experienced so far:
-increased endurance (throat and backbore is a little smaller than my previous piece)
-FLEXIBILITY. The most flexible piece I've ever played.
-response. Awesome response. Period.
-sound. Resonant and really versatile. I imagine due to the bronze top, it easily brightens up when I want it to, and becomes dark or soft when I want it to as well.
-low range. The low notes are just THERE. It's a miracle. I don't really have to TRY for them like I used to. Even going from a G above the staff to an F# below, it's amazing how flexible it is.
Overall, it gives me everything the Monette did, and more. I don't know if this brand will work for you, and I know it's not a USA company, but at lest from me, I'd say give it a shot. |

Can second this recommendation. I have the same mouthpiece in copper, as well as a bronze lead piece and my experiences are similar to what Bryant Jordan posted here. If you get the chance, I'd really recommend to try them out. |

I'm not sure. They look similar. The best way to find out is to ask AR Resonance themselves. They usually replay within 1 or 2 days. |

I use a Curry, but I'm not sure there is a 'best' as such. Depends on you really. |

I’ve been using it for all around playing. I was on a slightly larger mouthpiece before, and thought I’d sacrifice a lot of ‘core’ and ‘depth’ to my sound with this size, but I really haven’t. Really great piece. |

Mine is. My personal 3C top is best. You can't have it
Jks - trial and error my friend. It sucks, but it took me ages to find out what I liked. Like most people I started on a 7C (or equivalent) but was then moved to a Bach 1 straight away and never thought about it much more until a teacher at university said "that'd be hard work" and gave me a 1.25C.
Cut to about 15 years after that conversation, over 100 mouthpieces later, I've been on the same mouthpiece for the last 4 years (custom made by AR Resonance). I knew what I wanted, I got a consultation, and the result is spectacular. I have another mouthpiece I really love (made for me by a friend in Japan), but it honestly doesn't get much use, because my personal top is perfect.
Sorry, but welcome to the journey, see you on the other side! |
