I would like to read up on pedagogy. What are the most important books or studies? I am especially interested in anything that is backed up by evidence as opposed to something that proposes methodology based on a persuasive argument. What would be the top ten things I should read if I could only read ten? Thanks in advance for your opinions!192.168.0.1 routerlogin 192.168.l.l

The go-to would be David Hickman's Encyclopedia as a starting point.

I think this is the book in question:

TRUMPET PEDAGOGY: A Compendium of Modern Teaching Techniques is the largest and most complete book ever written about trumpet playing. 503 pages. DIGITAL ONLY! 369 photos; 89 illustrations; dozens of music examples. David Hickman is considered one of the world's finest trumpet pedagogues with 45 years of university teaching. A must for all serious players and teachers! THIS BOOK IS PERMANENTLY OUT OF PRINT IN HARD COPY, but is available as a digital download. Because the file is much too large to email, it must be sent via WeTransfer, usually same day. WHEN YOU ORDER HERE ONLINE, make sure that your email address is correct. We will send the book to you in digital form, and you will receive an email from WeTransfer that will allow you to download it. The book used to sell in hard copy for $89, but is now much less expensive.

Does anyone know if the Hickman 'compendium' provides any guidance about, or evaluation of, the various techniques that are included in the book?

It would help us make useful suggestions if you explain your goals and needs for the material.
Are you searching for instructional information to improve your own playing?

In my opinion, a thorough pedagogy needs to address these main items:
1) The desired 'sonic output'.
2) The physical 'input' that is needed.
3) How to produce and control the physical 'input'.

+1 for Hickman's book.

I'm not aware of any other books that study the study of trumpet. It does a good job of high level investigation without blessing or condeming any of the teachers/schools listed.

Steenstrup’s Teaching Brass is the best pedagogy book I’ve ever read. It has lots of clear explanations and supporting evidence. He has a perspective no doubt, but it’s well supported.

The two Keith Johnson books, Brass Performance and Pedagogy and The Art of Trumpet Playing are excellent pedagogy books as well. They’re more personable and less sciencey than the Steenstrup book.

It isn't as well know as the books already mentioned, but I've found Frank Campos's book "Trumpet Technique" useful. https://global.oup.com/academic/product/trumpet-technique-9780195166934?cc=us&lang=en&

It's been a while since I read it, but my recollection is that it's a fairly comprehensive overview of different subjects, styles, and topics in trumpet teaching/playing, and has some parts that would likely be instructional for any reader, but isn't primarily instruction or guidance. For instance, in presenting descriptions of the many different schools of playing and teaching, he tries to explain the primary views and goals of each approach, many of which disagree with each other, so it's a good resource for reference, and entry point to more in depth study in many areas, but not likely to give complete and detailed guidance about many topics.

The Streenstrup is a concise science-based book, if my memory doesn't fail me it's backed-up by articles and studies but don't quote me on that, it's been a while since I read it.

I personally like both of Keith Johnson's books, I like how he treats pedagogy from a more musical point of view.

The Hickman Pedagogy book is a must-have for anyone interested in pedagogy. It covers from the basics of posture to common problems that a trumpet player could encounter in their career.

You have to practice a variety of things. People can talk theory but you have to practice and know the why of it. In the past 20+ years of observing various conferences and events I think many people have gotten away from flexibility studies like some of the ones listed above. They do buzzing and long tones instead and miss the benefit of feeling the coordination of tongue level and wind power and the feel and sound of resonance that can ONLY happen when playing the TRUMPET. The reason is that we play a tube that resonates. What people describe as "slotting" is simply the notes resonating at the frequency the tube wants to produce a pitch at. Gaining skills is so we can play music and it all goes together.

Here are two links that show various points of view on how things work. The practicing is what matters the most though.

Have fun!
These are excellent times to practice and improve more.

I second Jeff Purtle's response above and add that Gordon Mathie published his Trumpet Teacher's Guide in many editions that was well organized by category.
