Howdy folks,

I'm looking for an external microphone for my lessons over Zoom.

The mic in my laptop cuts out about 80% of my sound.

Any suggestions for a decent USB mic?

I'm not planning on recording with it, so budget is around $200.

TIA.

Hello,

I don't know if that helps but I have read somewhere there is 2 or 3 settings to change on zoom for musicians to have a fair sound. Things like desactivate noise cancelling.

Thanks for the link! Yes, I've tried all that already.

I don't record myself much, nor do I take or give zoom lessons... So I'm sure others opinions will be better informed.

I have a Blue (snowball) and the sound quality is more than acceptable (placement does need thought, as with any mic!) - I can only assume that the Yeti with a wider range of adjustments would be even better.

I got the Raleno USB microphone for my daughter's remote tuba playing. It has a volume boost knob on front and works well so far.

I have an audio technica. One thing I learned reading up is that often an ipad will have better audio/video than a mac/pc. You may want to try out the devices you have with a friend to see how they do on recording/transmitting. Unsolicited advice: the #1 problem for most lessons is internet quality.

No, I'm not being silly, I use one of these for on-line lessons.

One of the things you care about is latency. Some of the less expensive USB microphones have a noticeable delay. The ones I saw recommended above do not have that problem.

I use the Blue Yeti as well, and am very pleased with the results.

Thanks Gary! Now that I think of it, I do have a Zoom H2 packed away somewhere. I forgot all about it. I'll dig it out and give it a try!

Cheers,

I also use a Zoom H2n (from zoom.na) like the one pictured above for Zoom (conferencing, zoom.us) work, mostly broadcasting church services, etc. I have also used it for remote interpreting, and it also works well for that (a place where latency is bad). I think it would work very well for taking or giving online lessons. Be sure to turn on Original Sound in the Zoom (zoom.us) conferencing application.

I'm glad the Zoom (handheld recorder) was posted above. I've been considering livestreaming my band program's Christmas concert this year and I knew it could be used as an audio interface. I'll have to give it a try.

Agreed. And mess with the setting for music as well as the various setting on the microphone. There are a couple great tutorials on Youtube about this and the adjustments, and they are spot on.

I have used Blue Yeti and Zoom H2n for zoom lessons and haven't had any students complain yet. I have had a few students order them to use for lessons as well... will report back on my perception of sound quality.

Something I learned today:
* Previously I was using it with Skype at 44.1 KHz sampling.
* With Zoom - at least with the OS/X Application - it needs to be set to 48 KHz.

Otherwise you get questions like "Are you sure that's a Bb trumpet?"

Gary.

The Q2N has the same audio guts plus video. I got one and have been recording videos and using as a web cam.
