Is there a Bach 3C mouthpiece with a larger backbore?
To achieve a smoky effect...like Fruscella

You could custom order one, which may take a while.
A 3C is a fairly shallow cup. I'm not sure a larger backbore would be enough to counter that.
You would probably be more successful having a 3C rim threaded onto an underpart with a deeper cup, funnel shaped.
Or you could contact Matt Frost (frostcustombrass.net) - he has an expansive library of backbore duplications and he might have something that works. _________________ -Tom Hall-

Hi, I use a Curry 3BC. Read his description on Curry's website.

You can go the Curry 3CB route or the Austin Custom Brass MV3C or MV3CB. At least with ACB you should be able to buy a screw cup and backbore so you can have a few options without spending a lot on combos that may or may not work. But if you really want a smoky sound you might want to consult with them on something deeper, like one of the flugel shaped cups on a trumpet backbore. Call them for a consult, but also check out Trent's Youtube channel where he demos almost every mouthpiece they make.
Disclaimer: I do not work for nor have any affiliation with Austin Custom Brass or Curry except I am a happy customer with several of their products. _________________ Brian James

Maybe you can get a beater Bach 3C and experiment with opening up the throat. It won't be much of a loss as much of a learning experience.

I think you're looking for a deeper cup, not necessarily a more open throat.

Curry 3B, 3TC, 3TF. | I agree. Changing the cup is the way to go. jw |

delano nailed it
Tone is about embouchure plus mouthpiece plus instrument working together as a system.
Mouthpiece changes are the easiest cheapest and quickest but they often fail in the long run.
Beware of making mouthpiece changes alone without paying attention to the embouchure. After the change the tones usually drift back to the tones you had before the mouthpiece change.
It is the embouchure change that is the permanent change and the most productive.
Working on the tone formation exactly as delano indicated is good advice but adding a mouthpiece cup change to this offers the best chance of a quick and permanent improvement. _________________ Conn 80a Cornet

Buy a Bach 1-1/2C. Don’t let the number scare you, it’s very similar to a 3C except the cup is a bit deeper. Still pretty easy to play, and a much richer sound than the 3C. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |
