"If you need a cornet that plays like a trumpet, just buy a trumpet!"
I know, I know...
The reason I'm looking for that kind of instrument is to avoid buying a pocket trumpet. I'm looking for a compact wrap .460 bore instrument that plays and sounds great.
I'm considering both used and new instruments.
Thank you. |

Conn 17 A Director cornet. Student trumpet plays like a trumpet, great looking coprion bell. Conn 28 A Connstellion long cornet. Very versatile horn, looks like a trumpet . Can sound like trumpet or cornet depending on mouthpiece. _________________ Jupiter 520 M shepherds crook cornet

I think a cornet wrap would give me a better sound. I used to have a Manchester Brass pocket that I liked but the sound was nothing special.
There are more expensive pocket trumpets I'd consider but some of these models are more expensive than a good cornet. |

The Bach ML bore 181 series long cornets are basically trumpets wrapped up like a cornet. If you put a C cup mouthpiece on it, you're pretty much there.
They are plentiful used, with prices that aren't too bad. _________________ (List horns here) |

Great horns, I can attest. If it fits your definition of “compact wrap” it wouldn’t be a bad choice.
I also enjoy my 80A which barely counts as a cornet in some circles. Also plentiful and cheap on the used market, just have to find a good mouthpiece. |

I'm confused. With the myriad of makes and models of trumpets, why can't you find one that you like, vs. a cornet? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Loads of eBay cornets would meet your requirements for under $200.
Those I’ve played include Conn 80A, Holton Collegiate, Holton 29. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I'm a little confused.
Long cornets that sound like trumpets are invariably almost as long as trumpets - the Mendez is so close you can't tell which you have without checking the markings, as was the case with some of Bach's cornet-in-leadpipe-only experiments.
If you need compact form, why not a Carol pocket or similar? What is the reasoning there? (Robb Stewart has built pockets that are virtually indistinguishable from the full size horns in sound and feel - not sure what you are after here) _________________ Ron Berndt

Hello all,
I nominate a Schilke A1. Owned one years ago and felt that it was mp sensitive enough to fit both bills. I also had a friend who played in Hawaii years ago who told me that one of his pro trumpet cohorts, played an A1 for shows and other gigs. _________________ Christian K. Peters

It's a .465 bore, but I'm thinking you would really be impressed with an early forties Holton model 29. _________________ Holton Model T-105 Trumpet

Funny how a thread like this is going, a short evaluation which makes also clear why I feel not happy on this forum.
The OP wants a cornet,
because he don't want a pocket trumpet,
he wants one with a compact wrap,
with a 0.460 bore, which will play (like a trumpet) and sound great.
(Is this all VERY difficult to grab?)
Some selections of answers:
Conn 17A cornet. 0.484 bore
Conn 28A cornet 0.438 bore
Why not a pocket trumpet?
Great call (the pocket trumpet)
Conn 80A 0.484 bore
With all that trumpets why can't you find one vs. a cornet?
Long cornets...are invariably almost as long as trumpets (not true, my Ambassador is about 4 inch shorter than my Yamaha 6345. And why a long cornet? The OP is asking for a compact wrap)
Why not a Carol pocket trumpet?
Holton 29 0.465 bore
Schilke A1, probably not realistic because very expensive, (this depends on the intention of the OP which I interpreted as a question for a carry-on horn).
Bach 181, I don't know that one, maybe not really compact.
Some prove why TH is not a good source for information especially not for newbies. Those threads goes the same route of individual preferences over information. BTW the OP has knowledge of instruments, he will not be upset. |

I participated in the thread in a meaningful way by suggesting an instrument that met the parameters OP was looking for: Bach 181 which is a ML bore, trumpet like sounding cornet. Definitely more compact than a trumpet, but perhaps not quite as compact as a British styled cornet. An instrument you said you had no knowledge of but decided to make an inaccurate statement about anyway.
To answer your question of short vs. long cornet, OP is looking for a cornet that sounds like a trumpet. Short cornets do not often have trumpet like sounds vs. the long styled ones that typically will. Hence the suggestion of a long style cornet.
As far as the responsibility comment, I won't dignify that with any further response.
Thanks for playing!
p.s. I do, by the way, agree that many folks go off the rails. It's frustrating to sort through the muck to find the real info but that is how it's always been in this forum. The mods don't have time to approve posts or delete ones that don't matter. _________________ (List horns here)

Golden rule of internet fora: people answer the questions they wish were asked, not the questions that actually were asked. It’s a human nature thing. |

The OP asked for a cornet that plays like a trumpet. Not a cornet that sounds like a trumpet. As long as you are using a cornet mouthpiece, the cornet will not play like a trumpet. It just won't.
A cornet, even with a trumpet style cup, still asks you to focus your sound into the horn and not through the horn as does a trumpet.
Yes, there is still a benefit to playing a cornet to keep your chops up, but it is not going to train you to play the trumpet. _________________ Richard
