Who makes your favourite stock production [Piston] C trumpet?

I'm defining production here as anything other than made-to-order boutiques.

Vote and post your axe below!
Feel free to add any comments on why that specific model or whatever.

I have the Fides C and like it (and intonation is much improved with a Kanstul M-C4 mouthpiece). I have Carol's pocket C and I love it but the intonation isn't as good. So, honestly, I chose Fides because I don't have any of the others on the list

I have thought of buying a more mainstream C (there's both a 239 and a Yamaha 9445CH for sale locally).

Hello all,
I have or have owned a Schilke C4, C1L. Yamaha 6445, Bach 229/25A, A2C and a C3HD. The last two Schilkes are my favorite.

The new B&S metropolitan is quite a good horn (and at a good price!)

I've finally replaced my tuning bell Bach C that I've been playing for over 10 years

You left a lot out. Many will not be able to participate in the poll.

I voted Bach though I've only played a couple on the list. And as much as I like certain Bachs the very best was Malone modified. And some of the Bachs I've played felt lousy.

The problem with me is that I have never had the need for a C trumpet, so my criteria are way different compared to the typical C trumpet player. Still, the gol-durn truth is that my favorite is the Kanstul 1410 Bb/C convertible.

I find its almost Eb-like sound captivating. It's so different from a Bb, but not wretched sounding like some narrow-bell Bb trumpets I could name. It has a tone that is sweet & rich like an entrancing, light-timbre soprano singer. It is more of a descant sound than a fanfare sound. I also think it has the most inherently good intonation of any trumpet of any type I've ever played. I longed for Zig to build a proper dedicated Signature version of it, but of course that possibility is long gone.

I prefer the Bach large bore with 229 bell and 25A leadpipe. Great sound and flexible in many settings.

Hi, I've had an older Benge C, Kantsul made Zeus G., older Bach 239 CML, and a Schilke S22. I recently had Jim Becker blueprint and add a 25A pipe to a basket case Bach 239C I picked up at a great price and this horn outplays all the above mentioned C's by far and is now my favorite C. I got it for that Bach sound and it did not disappoint me. I vote for Bach.

BTW, how do you vote? I did not get a promt.

The only trumpet I'd buy sight-unseen is a Yamaha.

Having been fortunate enough to play a few brands of C, when it came time to choose my own I went with Yamaha hands down. For me personally, the Bach didn't feel right and I've heard mixed reviews on those. I love my Bach cornet, however, but it seems that I got a good one. Schilke was a close second to my Yamaha, but at the end of the day the Yamaha played just slightly better. I briefly had an Eastman C with a reverse leadpipe as it was on loan from a friend and it played quite well, but I still liked the Yamaha the best. I have found that I can play with a wide variety of colors and use it as both a member of an orchestra or quintet or a solo instrument. I played a couple models before choosing my own, the 9445CHSII, 9445NYSII, and the 8445 and at the end of the day chose the 8445, to my own surprise as well. Personally, I did not notice a big difference between the 8445 and the 9445 models and found I played better on the 8445 (however this may be due to me playing on an 8335 for years and how the instruments are quite similar in my opinion). At then end of the day, I would go with Yamaha first and Schilke second as they are both quite high quality instruments that are consistent. The Bach is third due to their variance, but they do produce a beautiful sound if you get a good one.

You forgot to mention piston in the survey.

I voted Schagerl as my rotary C is hands down amazing. After that, my piston Thein and Kanstul/Besson outplay any Yamaha or Bach myself, or those owners have compared... the usual comment is, ‘Oh, ****.’

The problem is that if you never try other horns, or always believe what you are told about that 'sound', then you will never know. The great players I personally know sound like themselves, with that ‘sound’ on a Back or Yamaha, or a hose pipe. It is them, not the horn.

Cheers

Andy

Which variant? There's a few different versions I think.
I've personally had my eye out for one for a while. I don't know what has been going on in the used trumpet maket but I have heard people say things about such and such model going to $x. Usually from about 5-10 years ago. I look for those same instruments now and the price is tripled. Used instruments that were going to $500-600 bucks 10 years ago are now going for $1500+

I guess a lot of them have now become collector's items or something but I get jealous when I hear of people picking up old F Besson C trumpets for $500 buck. Last couple I saw where both ~ $1600.

Sorry, I've only mentioned brands that are still making instruments which sadly means Kanstul is out.

People can still comment their favourite if it's not on the list!

My former Ganter C-rotary was a very very good instrument, my piston Courtois 'Delmotte' is a joy to play, very underrated C-trumpet in my opinion

Schilke C3Lb is my favorite.
Schilke CXL was second.
Schilke S22C was third.

Therefore, I voted Schilke as my favorite C trumpet brand.

For a mix of a very good trumpet that is also a good value, I bought a pretty new lightly used Schilke S22CHD for $1,600

Have also played the Yamaha artist series and Bach Chicago.

I voted Yamaha because I play a Gen 2 Chicago and love it!

That being said... when I was trying instruments I spent most of my time trying to choose between my Chicago and a Bach Artisan C. Both instruments had great intonation, good tone quality and were pretty easy to play (especially for someone like me that hadn't played much C before). My Yamaha won on the day but I could also have very happily come out with the Bach.

I would also second the comments above about the Kanstul/Besson Cs... when they come up in the UK they seem to be very reasonably priced and I've played two that were great. For me not quite as good as the more expensive models listed above but great C trumpets nonetheless.
