I wanted to add, most of the (handful of) brass players I know double on other instruments, usually keyboards. And they seem to have more gigs or playing opportunities on them than trumpet.

Of course we all have different goals. It's fine to play one instrument, just as it's fine to play multiple instruments.

But I agree with this statement. I get more gigs nowadays on piano than I do on trumpet. A trumpet-playing friend of mine back in college doubled on bass, and got a lot of gigs this way too.

I had a friend who got the coveted improv-solo seat in the One O'Clock Band at North Texas and he traded it later for the Bass seat in the Three O'Clock Band. I asked him incredulously what he was doing and he answered, "Bass players work".

What is your experience with playing similar instrumets - trumpet and flugelhorn. Any disadvantage for my trumpet playing when I pick up a flugelhorn from time to time? Do you need to practice both?
