Hello,
Does anyone know the how to determine a "legit" mellophone mouthpiece. I have looked for any definitive answers, but I haven't come across any information that would give me a conclusive answer.
Best I have seen so far is Blessing 5 or 6, but again, seems like one is for a Tenor Horn. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Need some help for a student.
Thanks! |

Assuming you have a modern melophone with a trumpet receiver...
Most horn players either use an adapter and use their horn mouthpiece (better for their horn chops but not great for pitch) or use some type of trumpet mouthpiece
A lot of drum corps and even bands are having melophone players use Curry TC or TF pieces. They give great control, pitch and tone.
I don't remember what diameter I used, but my kids really liked them and did not mind switching back and forth to a horn mpc when they came inside |

Most DCI drum corps use the Hammond 5MP or the 6MP on mellophone. |

In addition stocking the Curry TF line, we also make an Osmun 6V mellophone mouthpiece to fill void of the discontinued German made DEG, Blessing, King/Conn Mello 6V. Visit our website for more details. _________________ James Becker

Years ago Schilke made my mouthpiece for the Conn 16E's we used on the Kenton band. They had receivers for a cornet shank and Reynold Schilke made mine with my trumpet rim and a Farkas french horn cup. What backbore he used I couldn't say but the mouthpiece made the Conn much better. Legends now makes a copy of my original Schilke called the Scodwell Mello. I do believe it's a tad better than the original.

Hi all,
Thanks for your help on this! It is a trumpet shank receiver, so I'll play around with the mentioned brands a bit. Would hate to give them a mouthpiece that makes them sound like lasers! |

Solid advice here already, I'm partial to the Curry TF pieces myself, but you won't go wrong with the Hammond design pieces either. _________________ Martin D Williams

Kelley has two colors on sale (yellow and red) but I've also seen mellophone mouthpieces on sale on ebay for around $20/mp. If you're buying for a marching band that marches in the cold, it might be something to consider. |
