I love the Super Collegiate models with the three tone metal. Brass, Nickel silver and rose brass. Bullet proof valves. _________________ "There is no necessity for deadly strife" A. Lincoln 1860

I play a Super Collegiate as well. I had the valves replated and the third valve tuning slide reversed. I've used it for quintets, brass choirs, orchestra cornet parts, etc., for the past few years and been really pleased with the results. |

Galaxy. Sweetest sound to ever come out of a cornet. And there's one on Ebay right now. I'm resisting mightily. _________________ Richard

Honest answer... Any of em! That being said, I have grown quite fond of my model 28 from 1952. Extra large .485 bore with red brass bell. If you don't like the extra large bore size, the model 29 is basically the same design only with a .465 bore size. Both horns are great. Keep in mind that these models had a different look in forties. They became heavier and the bells became wider in the fifties. I love em all, and I think that you probably will too! _________________ Holton Model T-105 Trumpet

Thanks for the replies, Holton lovers! My Model 29 is currently outside on a bench slathered in Jasco stripper. Loved the sound, not the mottled lacquer. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Forman model (1906)
But as far as those generally available:
Traditional short cornet: Holton New Proportion Short Model (1904-1912/3)
American Long cornet: Holton Model 27 Stratodyne (1948-1965)
Might as well throw in the worst too: Holton FC model (1912-1916)
(they basically couldn't give them away, and no-one seems to even know what FC stood for, but given the strong negative feelings players seem to have for them, most of the proposed meanings can't be typed here) _________________ Ron Berndt

I was curious what my Model 29 cost in 1946 and what it would be in 2020 dollars and I found the answer in an old Holton catalog.
$27.50 in 1946
$1,833 in 2020

Love my New Proportions short. Probably the best short cornet I’ve ever played. _________________ a few different ones |

Was definitely on my radar when I was playing cornet. The old Holton has it’s downfalls when sitting in front row. I actually ended up on baritone and am enjoying the hell out of it _________________ a few different ones |

Jim -- you typo-ed $27.50 rather than $127.50

I had a mint one. The best I can cay about it was it was "ok"
Better ones:
Conn:Wonderphone, Perfected Wonder, Concert Grand, 5A, 38A
King: Perfecto and Master
Martin Committee
Strad 184
Getzen Capri or Eterna
The above is a short list and only the ones I am familiar with/played
If you are derious about playing you really need to get a very available Strad. I only paid $1200 _________________ Too many Old Cornets to Count |

Was it a short model? I only ask because so many believe the Couturier or Clarke with the shepherds crook is a short model but they are not
The short model have a very traditional almost French wrap _________________ a few different ones |

Nice quote but certainly not mine. Never owned or played a Holton New Proportion. I thought that they all had the shepherds crook. Would love to own one. Up to now they were to expensive for me. |

I have a couturier model with the funky. It’s nice. The short model is very nice. Up till now I had only only shorty, scored another for $99 just the other day. It is in better condition then my other. I love them. To me they do feel quite similar to the Getzen 800.
The one I just got was old enough to include a coffin case _________________ a few different ones |
