It always struck me that The Horse would be a great chart for double C players to go to town on those E - G - C - A and E - G - A - C - A licks but I've never heard a performance of it like that even after searching Youtube.

Ever seen/heard such a performance?

I don't think I've ever even heard that tune before. I had to go look it up.

Hmm.. Its heyday as a radio play pop hit was many moons ago but I was under the impression it's remained a staple of marching band repertoire over the decades.

I was in high school when it came out. We loved it and played it...Great rhythm, horns, and no silly vocals!
Never entertained the possibility of 8va. Nobody I knew could do that back then.

My high school marching band.....the JFK High School marching MUSTANGS played The Horse about 17 million times while I was a member. I was still hearing it in my sleep way into my college career. Don't care if I EVER hear it again, 8va or otherwise.....

That's funny. I get your point, but....
I was at a friend's house last night...Trumpet, sax, guitar, bass, drums. We were just playing around with various tunes.
It occurred to me that a lot of jazz can be like "The Song That Never Ends". "The Horse" is a bit monotonous, and for some of us, overplayed. But there's nothing wrong with the chord structure, and if done tastefully, it could be a pretty good jam.
Are y'all aware of a jazz version?
