This has been on my mind for a while, and I’m wondering what others think.

First, to be clear, I know the type of playing you mainly do has the biggest affect on what type of horn is most important to you. For me, it’s the Bb, followed by C, followed by flugel, then pic, then the others (cornet, Eb/D, rotary, etc.) fall into place according or as needed.

Just wondering, for you, what type of horn is most important? The overwhelming majority will answer Bb, but I’m curious to see how many mainly use C or possibly even something else. Any thoughts or comments are welcome as well.

Thanks!

Also, I’m curious to see where the less common trumpets (cornet, rotary, Eb, herald, etc.) fall in your rank of importance.

I try to use a cornet in wind bands whenever I can get away with, mostly because I just really like playing it and enjoy the challenge, as it were, of really trying to blend into the trumpets. But B flat trumpet is obviously the go-to.

First choice is no surprise Bb trumpet, but second is rotary Flugel. Piston flugel nor cornet is not common in our piece of land. Eb/D used to be more common in the past but not now.

Rotary Bb, Bb bass trumpet, then piston Bb, and finally flugel.

Baritone, short cornet and then trumpet. All Bb.
Most of my time on a horn is in a British style brass band. Just started baritone last season. Before that most of my time was on cornet. I use trumpet in regular concert band. This year has been a wash though. So most everything I’m doing is on cornet

When I played in community orchestra, it was C followed by picc followed by Bb.

When I played in community band, it was Bb.

I have a non-musical day job, and pre-COVID played 3-4 gigs a month in a jazz trio, with an occasional church gig or bugler assignment. For me, it's Bb trumpet and flugelhorn almost exclusively.

Overwhelmingly, it's clear that the Bb is the go to horn in most settings, but the second place slot varies widely between all players with different gigs and focuses. From rotary pic to flugel...pretty extraordinary.

Working in the jazz, latin and commercial world, for me it's Bb trumpet first and then flugelhorn. I have never had a need for anything else.

Mostly church gigs. So Bb, Flugel, and very occasionally C. If I was good on the Picc it would probably be more frequent than the C.

LOL, I love questions like this . . . "Horns ranked by importance?"

The most important horn(s) will always be the one(s) that works best with the piece of music currently on your music stand!

I'm a classically oriented student (focus on orchestral stuff with some chamber music thrown in. Very occasionally do musical theatre things)

My order is: Bb, C, Piccolo, Eb/D, Natural trumpet, cornet, flugel

There are periods when I play C as my main instrument but otherwise the order remains the same

I thought this topic was about horns ranked by importance not horns ranked by trumpet type. I was hoping for a discussion on the most important trumpets (b-flat of course) ranked by brand, model, and etc.

OK, for specifics: back BC (before COVID) I was Eb cornet chair in a Brass Band for the last 5 or 6 years, so first and foremost, Eb Schilke cornet, some frequent feature numbers on my Kanstul 920 Bb Pic, and whatever Bb I was inspired to dig out for the community band (for example, Strad ML 37 trumpet for more serious work on the Christmas concert, an early 50's Blessing Artist Stencil for our swing concert, my Bb Strad 37 cornet for the march concert) and for 1 German festival concert my Getzen 4 valve flugelhorn. Howzat?

Oh, wait, back in '92 I did the 4th trumpet part for Stravinsky's Rite of Spring on my Strad bass trumpet! And once per year I play "Via Dolorosa" on a Bach F Mellophone for a church Maundy Thursday service. Does that count?

But I just play for fun, or to test horns before I put 'em up on eBay!
