This all represents gig-life before COVID:
The ultimate measure of importance is whether you need a horn to get the gigs you're offered. I absolutely need a Bb trumpet and a flugelhorn. I absolutely need a picc (once in a while).
Once in a blue moon I'm offered a (non-paying) opportunity to play with a community symphony. I think it's because I have a C trumpet, but I suspect if I showed up with a Bb and nailed the part it wouldn't matter.
I play a fair number of trad-jazz gigs and choose to play cornet on them. I wouldn't lose them if I played trumpet.
I have a D/Eb trumpet, and while I have chosen to use it, in either key, at times, it wouldn't have meant the difference between getting a gig or not.
And while it doesn't really matter in a trumpet group, I double on trombone. The reggae bandleader I play for demands slide trombone because he likes glisses, but I'd probably lose most of my other trombone gigs if I didn't play valves.

C, D, flugel, rotary pic in A, piston pic in Bb, various Bb cornets and trumpets - in that order. Of course I was put on a C full time in '71 (and I'm 64 now). And yes, I'm guilty of having played a lot of lead stuff over the years on C. (Shhhhhhh...)  |

I can count on one hand the number of paid gigs I've had that didn't require Bb trumpet and/or flugelhorn. Played a few weddings on piccolo and an Easter gig and brass quintets where I doubled on C trumpet. Everything else has just been Bb trumpet and flugel, with the exception of a few trombone gigs in my younger days. Cornet is just for my own amusement at this point, though I hope after this virus nightmare is over that I can do some brass band and/or Dixie stuff.
I haven't done any orchestral playing since college and sold the C trumpet about fifteen years ago.

Commercial musician and classic jazz lover so Bb,cornet and flugelhorn , C and piccolo just in case and pocket for vacation.
