Anyone know where I could get a 2nd valve slide for an Olds Recording cornet?

Maybe Jim Becker of Osmun Music or Charlie Melk of Charlie's Brass Works can help you find one.

You could try contacting this eBay seller, who seems to be a dealer in parts.

Or maybe this site...

Though no 2nd slide assemblies are listed for your cornet in the Allied parts catalog, the good news is there are crooks and tubing (brass not nickel) common to ALL Olds cornets with exception of the pearl inlayed pull knob. We’d be more than happy to build you a replacement using loose parts. Let me know if you’re interested.

I would get precise measurements. There are variations in tubing used in different models and years of the Olds. I have been collecting Olds for years. I tried an Ambassador trumpet 2nd valve slide in my 1947 Super Recording, and although the ID of the tubing was jsut about identical, the tubing in the Ambassador (probably late 60's) was about 5/1000's oversize. My Recording is off getting an alignment, or I would have tried that.

What I can tell you is what’s right in front of me, a 1939 Super Olds by F.E. Olds & Sons Los Angeles Calf. USA. The second slide tubes measure .468” x .508”, common with nearly every Olds cornet I can remember. There may indeed be outliers, but I haven’t any others in the shop at the moment to compare.

I can attest that Olds Mendez trumpets and Ultrasonic inside slide tubes are lightweight with an O.D. of .490”, like Schilke standard and Bach LT tubing. While the majority of Olds trumpets standard inside slide tubing O.D. is .498”.

What’s also interesting is the 2nd slide crook O-05082-3 is common to Olds Ambassador, Special, Mendez, Opera, Recording, Super, and Studio cornets.

FWIW I’m confident we can machine a plain Olds pull knob O-03632-7 to accept a pearl inlay to match originals.

I hope this is helpful.
