Yeah, I was fortunate enough to meet him, too. It's something I'll never forget.

I did see that youtube of him playing with Diz. If I run across it again, I'll post it here.

I don't see any jealousy or envy. It is more of a bias towards one style of playing or the other.

While Al Hirt had world-class skills, he mostly focused those skills into a very narrow genre. Dixieland fans are happy he did, but others may think that he wasted his talents.

For the record, I am a huge fan.

Jeff

This is a very important post. It shows that though you can have all the skills, you are a great fellow and all the other benefits, still to become a real world class artist you have to find your (own) form of music. The form is so important.

Nice to see players from different musical styles playing and enjoy themselves.I guess the real greats can just about cover any style. George Benson kills as well.
A bit off topic. Years ago when George released Breezin, he appeared on The Midnight Special. Glen Campbell was the host and they played Affirmation together. Neither guy can read music but they just tore it to pieces. Most people think of Glen as a country guy but he was a beast. I've met Jimmy Webb many times and he once told me Glen was the most talented musician he had ever met.

Not bad for a guy who insisted "I'm not a jazz player, I've never been a jazz player" - lol.

I got to see him with his combo when they passed through our city on tour in the mid 1960s. I was in junior high at the time, and my mom took my best friend (also a budding trumpet player) and me to the concert. I think my mom was a fan, too...

What a coincidence Dale, I think I was at the same concert. Between 1965 and 1968 at the old Madison County Coliseum? I remember him playing Carnival of Venice and it sounding like multiple trumpets.

George Benson. One of the greats that are still alive. I would pay a lot of money to see him live.

Yes, it was at the Madison County Coliseum. The friend that went with me was David Spencer. I guess I had two friends there that night!

I remember when 'Breezin' came out and all of my pop music friends started telling me about this 'new' singer.....I used to just laugh at them and shake my head until they made me explain it to them.....
I saw the Breezin band live and they were excellent. Benson's been a bit too poppy for my tastes since then, but he's a great singer and a really underrated jazz guitarist. I hear that he goes out of his way to make jam sessions and events to keep his hand in the more serious side of playing jazz and for that I applaud him.....
