I got fascinated by how you use your tonguing in phrasing in this one for some reason. It just stood out. The soft tonguing when you come off the slurs making the tongued notes blend in and then the harder tonguing to punctuate. Is that just learned and natural now or is it consciously done (either planned or as you play)? In the end I know it is just your getting your feel for the piece, but I am curious as to how it comes about. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Another interesting etude that you make sound simple, though it is not. Are you dreaming of Hawaii with that shirt? _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Really amazing job keeping this one musical. Such a temptation to let it go academic, but your interpretation of the dynamics and the flow are wonderful. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Really enjoyed the touch you brought to this. There were so many opportunities to leave the lovely lyricism you bring to these, like in the 16th note runs, but you resisted the temptation. Another lesson in how it should be done. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Among the many blessings for which I am thankful, the ability to make and share music with friends is a special treat. I first met Román Granada, winner of the 2020 Ictus Music Competition, just as Gustavo Dudamel was beginning his tenure with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The LA Phil sent a brass quintet down to Venezuela to observe and work with the amazing El Sistema program, and to hear the wonderful Simon Bolivar Orchestra. My LAP colleagues were incredulous at the level of music-making we heard. Since that time, we have had numerous opportunities to work together, and each time I walk away feeling enriched as a musician and as a "world citizen". Music truly is the universal language that does not recognize borders, political or otherwise. I am proud to call Román and his section mates both friends and colleagues. Please enjoy this collaboration.
