I'm always looking for things in other areas that may have relevance for trumpet playing, too. Check this out from today's New York Times.

That might help development of embouchure strength for high range.
After a suitable warm-up,
Do a very quick octave jump and hold. Start 1 octave below you highest reliable note (reliable when fresh) - hold the high note until end of 4 seconds.
Rest a bit, and repeat 14 more times.
In sports HIIT (High Intensity - meaning max effort, Interval Training, is a valid training technique. But done 'as designed', it does involve true max effort - not a limited amount of effort that would allow completion of all the intervals with the same amount of effort each time. It's like the old running training technique called 'wind sprints' or colloquially 'repeat until you puke'. _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

Nothing new here. Getting people off their ass and exercising for a half hour 3 times a week is as old as the hills. I see no relevance. jw |
