I'm wondering about the overall sonic quality of the LaBlanc flugelhorn, as opposed to other brands.

Not sure how to post this without seeming to be a smarta$$, but in case you want to do some searching, it is normally spelled LeBlanc.

I understand the Sandoval model F357 is a very nice horn if you can find one.
There is one listed on Ebay at the moment. 10 bids to $380. 1 day 21 hrs. left.

I have one, Sandoval model, that I purchased from eBay several years ago. I've been very pleased with it. Mechanically it is sound, the slide and valves all work flawlessly. It plays in tune and has a very ice sound with my GR FL mouthpiece. The horn is rally pretty in copper and the case that it came in is very solid.

I've often wondered why you don't see more of these around.

Mostly because it is well known to be a nearly exact copy of the Kanstul 1525 Flugelhorn. If the price point was the same, why not just get the Kanstul? But if it was a close copy that means it's a pretty great horn.

May I ask if you could give us some detailed review of the F357?
How would you describe it's sound?
How does it play in the high register? Does it close up?

LeBlanc was and probably still is made by Courtois which is a great flugelhorn, I believe. The OP does not say what age the LeBlanc he is looking at. The first flug I used was a LeBlanc back in 1968, a loaner to me as a Music Ed student for a couple of weeks. I believe it was similar to the Couesnon, which was highly regarded back then.

I have played my friends Holton flug which appears to be a Courtois product, a much more recent horn, probably pretty close to the Sandoval, and it was a gorgeous playing horn. A lot bigger than my Yamaha 632G with bigger sound but still very sweet and fluffy in balads.

The sound of the flugel is very mellow and dark (like a flugel). I'm using it with a GR66fl mpc and with that it does not sound like a trumpet or cornet but has it's own mellow sound. I really like it for ballads etc.
