Hi everyone!
I'm sharing a Youtube project I recently started up, mostly as a reference for students that are working on the Arban Art of Phrasing section.
The most recent one is #3, My Pretty Jane, and you can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1188w9L_rg
My "intro" video briefly talking about this all is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHnUKZV9uSk
Thanks, I hope you're all staying safe!
Sincerely,
Jen Marotta |

Thank you, there wasn't much recordings of the 'Art of Phrasing" on the web. And the little introduction is also helpful. _________________ Yamaha YTR-6335RC

Hi everyone,
Here's the latest Art of Phrasing video that I've done. This one is #6, The Last Rose of Summer.
I hope you're all staying safe!
Best,

Thanks for the demonstration.
About the 'short single grace notes' in #6: is there 'general guidance' about the duration that the grace note should be played? _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

Thanks, everyone! I'm sure there are many answers with different preferences to this, but I usually have my younger students learn how to play the rhythm correctly first, and then add the grace note into the texture. I usually place it slightly before the downbeat, although I think putting it on the downbeat is ok too, as long as the time doesn't get skewed. But, some like to play it out of time too. So, basically, I think we can do whatever we want, haha. But again for teaching purposes, I try to get them to have a really steady beat so that they're working on time, while fitting the grace note fluidly into that texture. |

Thanks Jen,
My habit has been to play the grace note slightly earlier than the timing of its attached (following) note - basically stealing a little time from the duration of the previous note, and playing the attached note at its 'proper time'. My duration of the grace note depends my interpretation of the entire phrase line - not too quick / not too long / just right - or so I like to think ...

Jen, thanks so much for posting. Thee videos are very helpful. Now, if you would kindly do the same for the rest of the Arban book, I would be much obliged.

Hi everyone!
I posted another Art of Phrasing video, #11-Now the Swallows are Returning. I touch on "musical storytelling" on this one.
Thanks!

Jen,
Thanks for posting those. Beautiful playing.
I like to tell my students to imagine that book at the time it was written. Electricity hadn't been discovered and Edison hadn't invented the light bulb, phonograph, and motion pictures or radio been invented.
If you wanted music you had to travel to hear it or make music yourself. Those 150 melodies are a cool piece of history and much more significant than we usually think. The USA hadn't been around long and all those opera melodies would have been like pop music at the time.
Thanks for recording them.
