Hey TH - I hope that this helps you out with your mutes!

I've found that most trumpet players never file the corks on their mutes ... not sure why? Perhaps the importance hasn't been stressed?

Does everyone here adjust their mutes to their own trumpet?

Anyone have a separate set of mutes for Bb and C?

I mean...now you've said it, it makes perfect sense

Sorry for the noob question but you mentioned using low F# as your guide - is that the note below G in the staff?

As you mentioned, filing the corks adjusts how far into the bell the mute sits. Does this also apply for a Harmon (wah-wah) - I've got a Denis Wick with cork all the way round - or is it less relevant or irrelevant since all the sound goes through the mute?

Thanks for sharing your video here

Not so much. The main thing with the harmon is that it stays in the bell. A horn with a very large flare (Calicchio 3, Wild thing) thicker cork is needed. Some of the Broadway cats stretch a piece of bicycle inner tube over the cork on their harmons to prevent embarrassing fallouts.

Thanks for checking out my video!

Yes, the F# below low G, so 123.

Not so much for harmon mute/solotone/mel-o-wah - but it can depend from mute to mute. The Ullven harmon mute actually has a very thick cork that is designed to be filed. Some mutes like the Emo have a foam that some people may think is too thick. Conversely, some corks may be too thin on harmon mutes and some people swap it out for foam.

But generally speaking, this is more for straight, cup, and the like.

The only mute I'm in the habit of filing is my H&B Stonelined cup. I HATE the sound when the cup is too far from the bell.
